The surgery itself was performed by Professor Prokar Dasgupta, a leading robotic urological surgeon who heads The London Clinic’s Robotic Centre of Excellence. Using a console in London, Dasgupta remotely controlled the Toumai Robotic System, manufactured by Microport, located at St Bernard’s Hospital, Gibraltar’s only hospital. The system, equipped with four robotic arms and a 3D high-definition camera, allowed for a precise prostatectomy – the surgical removal of the prostate gland.

Crucially, the procedure wasn’t simply about distance. it was about precision and minimal delay. Dasgupta reported a lag of only 0.06 seconds (60 milliseconds) between his movements at the console and the robot’s actions in Gibraltar. This near-real-time control was made possible by a high-speed fiber optic connection, with a 5G connection serving as a backup in case of disruption. A surgical team was present in Gibraltar, prepared to take over manually if needed, adding a layer of safety to the innovative approach.

The Technology Behind the Breakthrough

Remote surgery isn’t a novel concept, but the successful execution of this procedure represents a significant advancement. The Toumai Robotic System, as described in reports, allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced precision, flexibility, and control compared to traditional open surgery. Remote surgery could eliminate these barriers, bringing specialist expertise directly to patients, regardless of their location. This is particularly relevant for smaller territories like Gibraltar, where access to specialized medical services is limited. As Buxton noted, the procedure has effectively elevated Gibraltar’s surgical capabilities, reducing the need for residents to travel to the UK or Spain for complex procedures.

Professor Dasgupta is scheduled to repeat the procedure on March 14th, this time with 20,000 surgeons observing via livestream from the European Association of Urology congress.
