RFK Jr’s Autism Panel Sparks Rival Group to Shape Research Agenda

RFK Jr’s Autism Panel Sparks Rival Group to Shape Research Agenda

March 19, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

WASHINGTON — In a direct response to recent changes in federal oversight, a newly formed group of autism scientists and advocates convened Thursday to chart a course for future research priorities. The meeting, held as a counterpoint to the evolving direction of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) under the leadership of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., signals a growing effort to maintain a science-driven approach to understanding and supporting individuals with autism.

The impetus for this independent effort stems from Secretary Kennedy’s January appointments to the IACC, where a significant number of the 21 new members have publicly linked autism to vaccines, a claim repeatedly disproven by the scientific community. This shift in composition has raised concerns about the future of federally funded autism research, prompting the creation of the Independent Autism Coordinating Committee (I-ACC).

Research Priorities and a Focus on Underrepresented Needs

The I-ACC’s inaugural meeting focused on identifying key areas for research, with a particular emphasis on genetic biomarkers, the frequent co-occurrence of other diagnoses alongside autism and the needs of individuals with limited or no verbal communication – often referred to as profound autism. These areas represent critical gaps in current understanding and highlight a desire to prioritize research that directly benefits a wider range of autistic individuals and their families.

The group’s formation coincided with the cancellation of the first public meeting of the newly constituted federal IACC, originally scheduled for March 19. The Department of Health and Human Services postponed the meeting without providing a specific explanation, further fueling concerns about transparency and the direction of federal autism research.

Navigating Influence and Addressing Representation

While the I-ACC lacks the formal authority to dictate federal funding allocations, its members possess considerable influence within the autism community and have strong ties to advocacy organizations and private funding sources, such as the Simon’s Foundation. This positions the group to significantly shape the research landscape, particularly as overall funding for autism research continues to grow – increasing from $419 million to $568 million in the last five years, with private organizations now contributing 40% of the total, according to estimates presented at the meeting.

The group’s founder, Alison Singer, co-founder and president of the Autism Science Foundation, has been a prominent voice in advocating for a more nuanced understanding of the autism spectrum, including the controversial idea of splitting the autism spectrum into distinct subtypes. Singer’s leadership and connections were instrumental in quickly assembling the I-ACC.

However, the committee’s initial composition has similarly drawn criticism. Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of representation of autistic individuals themselves, with only one autistic person among the initial members. Elio McCabe, policy manager at the Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network, expressed disappointment at this imbalance, emphasizing the importance of autistic voices in shaping research priorities. The I-ACC acknowledged these concerns and discussed plans to expand membership to include more autistic self-advocates.

A History of Tension and a Search for Common Ground

The formation of the I-ACC reflects a long-standing tension within the autism research community. Previous meetings of the federal IACC were often marked by disagreements between scientists, advocates, and families regarding the most effective research strategies. Former members, like Joshua Gordon, a former director of the National Institute of Mental Health and chair of the federal IACC from 2016 to 2024, expressed concern that the current composition of the federal committee could exacerbate these divisions. “What is at stake now… is to divide rather than unite the autism community,” Gordon stated.

The I-ACC’s initial meeting, in contrast, was described as remarkably collaborative, with members largely agreeing on the need to prioritize research that addresses the diverse needs of autistic individuals. This relative harmony may be attributed, in part, to the shared sense of purpose in responding to the perceived shift in direction at the federal level.

Looking Ahead: A Competing Report and a Name Change?

The I-ACC plans to develop a comprehensive report outlining its research priorities, potentially serving as a counterpoint to the annual report typically produced by the federal IACC. The group also acknowledged the need for a more fitting name, with David Mandell, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, jokingly suggesting, “We do need to change our name, I think.”

The establishment of the Independent Autism Coordinating Committee represents a significant development in the ongoing effort to understand and support individuals with autism. As the federal IACC navigates its new direction, the I-ACC aims to provide a counterbalance, ensuring that research remains grounded in scientific evidence and responsive to the needs of the autism community. The coming months will be crucial in determining how these two groups interact and how their respective agendas will shape the future of autism research, and care.
