Trump Criticizes Zelensky, Favors Deal with Putin & Defends Russian Oil Sales

Trump Criticizes Zelensky, Favors Deal with Putin & Defends Russian Oil Sales

March 15, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Washington D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has once again publicly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, asserting that reaching an agreement with the Ukrainian leader is more challenging than dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The remarks, made during an interview with NBC News, come as efforts to broker a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine remain stalled.

“I am amazed that Zelenskyy doesn’t want to make a deal. Tell him to make a deal, as Putin wants to make a deal,” Trump urged.

The statement underscores a continuing divergence in perspectives on potential pathways to peace. Russia continues to demand the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the entirety of the Donbas region, a condition Ukraine consistently deems unacceptable. Recent trilateral peace negotiations involving the United States, Russia and Ukraine have been postponed, reportedly due to the escalating crisis in the Middle East, further complicating diplomatic efforts.

Simultaneously, Trump defended his decision to temporarily lift some sanctions on Russian oil, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from European leaders. The U.S. President explained that the move was intended to alleviate a surge in energy prices triggered by the conflict in Iran, authorizing the sale of Russian oil already in tankers.

“I need oil, I just want to offer the world oil,” Trump argued, assuring that the sanctions would be reinstated “immediately when the crisis is over.”

The decision to ease sanctions on Russian energy resources reflects a prioritization of global energy market stability, even as international pressure mounts on Moscow to end its military campaign in Ukraine. The move highlights the complex interplay between geopolitical considerations and economic realities influencing U.S. Policy.

In a separate development, Trump dismissed a proposal from Kyiv to assist Washington in countering Iranian drones. The offer came amid growing concerns about the proliferation of Iranian-made drones, some of which have been reportedly used by Russia in attacks against Ukraine.

“We don’t need help. Zelenskyy is the last person I would ask for help,” the U.S. Leader stated.

This rejection signals a reluctance within the Trump administration to deepen security cooperation with Ukraine beyond existing levels, and a perceived lack of reliance on Ukrainian assistance in addressing separate regional security challenges. The comment also underscores a broader pattern of strained communication between the two leaders.

The situation is further complicated by reports, March 11, 2026, that Zelenskyy has been urging Trump to increase pressure on Putin, according to a report by Fakti.bg. Zelenskyy reportedly implored Trump to refrain from pushing Ukraine towards accepting a ceasefire after more than four years of conflict. He conveyed to Politico that although his people are weary, morale remains high and they are not prepared to concede vast territories in eastern Ukraine to Russia.

Adding another layer to the diplomatic landscape, today, Trump revealed, as reported by BTV Novinite, that both Putin and Zelenskyy have expressed a desire for him to participate in a potential future meeting between the two leaders to discuss a path towards peace. This suggests a possible, albeit tentative, recognition from both sides of the potential value of U.S. Mediation, despite the existing tensions, and disagreements.

However, Trump’s own statements and actions suggest a willingness to prioritize transactional relationships and perceived national interests over traditional alliances. His assertion that he finds it more challenging to negotiate with Zelenskyy than with Putin raises questions about his approach to resolving the conflict and his commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The ongoing war in Ukraine continues to have far-reaching consequences, impacting global energy markets, food security, and geopolitical stability. The involvement of external actors, such as the United States, Russia, and Iran, further complicates the situation and underscores the need for a comprehensive and sustainable solution. The postponement of trilateral peace talks and the divergent views of key stakeholders highlight the significant challenges that lie ahead in achieving a lasting peace.

Zelenskyy has also confirmed the dispatch of teams of drone specialists to the Persian Gulf to assist U.S. Allies in the region in defending against Iranian drone attacks, mirroring the Shahed drones Russia has deployed against Ukraine. This move demonstrates Ukraine’s willingness to contribute to regional security efforts, even as it continues to grapple with its own existential threat.
