Trump Threatens Iran Oil Infrastructure Amidst Escalating Conflict & Middle East Tensions
Kharg Island, Iran – The United States conducted strikes against targets on Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports, late Friday, according to statements from former U.S. President Donald Trump. The action escalates a rapidly evolving conflict that is increasingly disrupting regional stability and impacting global energy markets.
Trump, speaking via social media, asserted that the U.S. Military had “annihilated” military objectives on the island. He further warned that any interference with the free passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil supplies, would prompt a reconsideration of his decision not to target Iran’s oil infrastructure more broadly. “I have decided NOT to destroy Iran’s oil infrastructure,” Trump stated. “However, if Iran, or any other, does anything to interfere with the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider my decision.”
The strikes come after days of escalating tensions, following an earlier period of relative calm. Mohamad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, had previously cautioned that Iran would “abandon all moderation” should its islands in the Gulf be attacked. Kharg Island, located approximately 30 kilometers off the Iranian coast in the northern Gulf, serves as the nation’s primary crude oil export terminal.
The situation is further complicated by Iran’s own retaliatory actions. Reports indicate continued Iranian aerial attacks against neighboring Gulf states. Explosions were heard in Doha, Qatar, early Saturday, prompting authorities to order evacuations in certain areas. This follows a pattern of escalating responses from both sides, with no immediate indication of de-escalation.
The conflict, now entering its third week, has spread throughout the Middle East, causing significant disruption to global trade and a surge in oil prices. The United States is reportedly preparing to bolster its military presence in the region, with discussions of deploying an additional 2,500 Marines and three naval vessels. The Wall Street Journal reported that the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship based in Japan, is also en route to the Middle East with its Marine contingent.
Trump indicated that the conflict is likely to persist, suggesting further attacks on Iran are planned. He also acknowledged that a change in power within Iran, a stated goal of Washington since the conflict began on February 28th, “may not happen immediately.” In a move aimed at disrupting the Iranian leadership, the U.S. Has offered a reward of $10 million for information leading to the location of ten high-ranking Iranian officials, including the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Jamenei and security chief Ali Larijani.
The health status of Mojtaba Jamenei remains uncertain following reports of injuries sustained during a bombing raid. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suggested on Friday that Jamenei was “probably” disfigured as a result of the attack.
Tehran itself was subjected to renewed bombardment on Friday, with journalists reporting a series of strong explosions throughout the day. Despite the ongoing attacks, Ali Larijani, a prominent Iranian official, appeared publicly alongside President Masud Pezeshkian in central Tehran, participating in a pro-government rally.
The rally drew a large crowd, though the exact number of attendees remains difficult to ascertain. The demonstration proceeded despite the threat of further attacks and followed more than 1,200 reported deaths according to Iranian authorities, and over 1,800 according to the non-governmental organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).
Larijani addressed the crowd, stating, “The problem with Trump is that he does not understand that the Iranian people are a brave nation, a strong nation, a determined nation.” He continued, “The more he intensifies his pressure, the more the determination of the nation will be strengthened.”
Meanwhile, Israel has also been actively engaged in the conflict, claiming to have carried out 7,600 strikes within Iran and 1,100 in Lebanon over the past two weeks. These strikes target Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned Islamist movement. The Israeli military’s actions in Lebanon have resulted in 773 fatalities, including 103 children, and approximately 2,000 injuries, according to Lebanese authorities.
A recent Israeli strike on a healthcare facility in southern Lebanon reportedly killed at least 12 medical personnel, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The state-run National News Agency (ANI) also reported that Israeli shelling struck a headquarters of UN peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah’s leader, Naïm Qassem, has affirmed the group’s readiness for a “long confrontation” with Israel. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s ideological military force, announced a joint operation with Hezbollah, launching missiles and drones towards Israel in response to the U.S. And Israeli attacks.
– The situation remains highly volatile, with both sides demonstrating a willingness to escalate the conflict. The long-term implications for regional stability and global energy markets are significant and remain uncertain.
