Trump-Xi Meeting Delayed & US News Updates: Live Coverage

March 26, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor

Beijing – A planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping has been rescheduled to May 14-15, following a delay prompted by escalating tensions in the Middle East. The meeting, initially slated for the conclude of March, was postponed due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, according to statements released by both the White House and Chinese officials.

This will be the first visit to China by a U.S. President in nearly ten years, a significant development given the complex and often strained relationship between the two global powers. The delay underscores the extent to which the situation in Iran has disrupted international diplomatic efforts, forcing a recalibration of priorities for the Trump administration.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the new dates on Wednesday, stating that President Xi “understood that it’s very crucial for the president to be here throughout these combat operations right now,” and accepted the request to postpone. Leavitt indicated that preparations are underway for reciprocal visits, with President Xi expected to be hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in Washington D.C. Later this year. Details of the Washington visit are still being finalized, officials said.

Beijing has yet to officially respond to the dates proposed by the U.S., though It’s not customary for China to announce President Xi’s schedule so far in advance. Earlier this month, China’s foreign ministry acknowledged ongoing discussions with Washington regarding the timing of Trump’s visit, signaling a continued desire for dialogue despite the geopolitical challenges.

The postponement stemmed from a sharp escalation of hostilities last month, following wide-ranging strikes conducted by the U.S. And Israel against Iranian targets. These strikes resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, triggering retaliatory attacks by Iran against Israel and U.S.-allied states in the Gulf region. Critically, Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, leading to a significant surge in fuel prices and a global energy crisis.

President Trump has publicly urged U.S. Allies to work towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and has threatened Iran with potential attacks on its energy infrastructure should it not allow full access through the strategic waterway. The situation remains volatile, and the White House has indicated that it anticipates the conflict to last approximately four to six weeks, though this timeline remains subject to change.

The rescheduled meeting between Trump and Xi is expected to cover a range of critical issues, including trade imbalances, international conflicts, and regional security concerns. The war in Iran will undoubtedly be a central topic of discussion, as will its broader implications for global stability and energy markets. The potential for increased cooperation – or further escalation – between the U.S. And China in addressing the crisis will be closely watched by international observers.

The timing of the summit also comes amid ongoing concerns about China’s intentions towards Taiwan. Recent U.S. Intelligence assessments, however, suggest that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is not expected in 2027, offering a potential, albeit limited, easing of tensions in the region. Nevertheless, the issue is likely to feature prominently in discussions between the two leaders.

the conflict in Iran has exacerbated existing logistical challenges, including significant delays at airports. The U.S. Government has reported the longest wait times ever recorded at airports, adding another layer of complexity to international travel and diplomacy.

The postponement and subsequent rescheduling of the Trump-Xi summit highlight the interconnectedness of global events and the challenges of maintaining diplomatic momentum in times of crisis. The meeting represents a crucial opportunity for the two leaders to address pressing international issues and potentially forge a path towards greater stability, but the outcome remains uncertain given the fluid and unpredictable nature of the current geopolitical landscape. The world will be watching closely to observe if this meeting can yield any meaningful progress in de-escalating tensions and resolving the ongoing conflicts that threaten global security.
