UAE Travel Chaos: Flights Cancelled, Tourists Stranded Amidst Conflict
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Travel agencies are cancelling trips to the United Arab Emirates as regional tensions escalate following an exchange between Israel and Iran. The cancellations, impacting potentially thousands of travellers, come during peak season for tourism to the Gulf state, coinciding with spring break for many European schools.
According to Pavel Papež, a representative of the Czech travel industry, between four and five thousand people could be affected by the cancellations. “Now is the high season and spring holidays are still ongoing,” Papež stated. Affected travellers are being offered options including rescheduling their holidays, choosing alternative destinations, or receiving full refunds.
The disruption to air travel is significant. Airlines have already cancelled 19 flights from Prague to the Middle East, and further cancellations are anticipated as the security situation remains volatile. The conflict is being treated as a force majeure event by travel companies, allowing for flexible solutions for customers.
Čedok, a major Czech travel agency, has cancelled all tours to the Middle East with departures scheduled up to and including . “We have also temporarily suspended the sale of tours to this region for the entire week,” said Čedok spokesperson Klára Divíšková. “Flights with later departure dates will continue to be evaluated based on current developments and security recommendations.”
Blue Style, another Czech travel agency, has also paused holidays to the Middle East. “We are allowing clients with flights scheduled to these countries up to , to change their destination or date free of charge, or to cancel without penalty,” explained Blue Style spokesperson Simona Fischerová. “We are contacting clients individually to find the best possible solution.”
Hundreds of people were scheduled to travel to the UAE this week, according to Jan Bezděk, a spokesperson for Fischer and Exim Tours. “We are contacting clients to either attempt to change their trip to another destination or offer a free cancellation and refund. The same conditions apply to clients who were scheduled to fly to Oman on Thursday,” Bezděk said.
Despite the disruptions, authorities and travel companies are reassuring tourists currently in the UAE that they are safe and well-cared for. Papež stated that those stranded are being provided with accommodation and food. The government of Abu Dhabi has reportedly offered to cover the costs of accommodation and meals for tourists until flights resume.
“Now is the time to wait,” Papež said. “Those in Abu Dhabi have been offered by the Abu Dhabi government to pay for their accommodation and meals until flights resume. I assume a similar proposal will be made in Dubai.” He added that while individuals will demand to take care of themselves in the interim, travel agencies are providing support, and the situation is not currently critical in terms of basic needs or safety.
The current crisis stems from an operation conducted by Israel and the United States against Iran, beginning on Saturday. In response, Iran, Israel, and Iraq announced the closure of their airspace, a move subsequently followed by Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest airport, has temporarily suspended operations.
Approximately 6,700 Czech citizens are registered as being in the affected region, according to the voluntary registration system, Drozd. As of Sunday, around 3,500 Czechs were in the UAE, and approximately 900 were in Oman.
The cancellations and travel disruptions highlight the vulnerability of the tourism sector to geopolitical instability. The UAE, a popular destination for European tourists, particularly during the spring months, now faces a significant downturn in visitor numbers. The long-term impact on the region’s tourism industry will depend on the duration and intensity of the current conflict and the speed with which airspace can be reopened.
Travel agencies are continuing to monitor the situation closely and provide updates to affected customers. The priority remains the safety and well-being of those currently in the region and ensuring that those with planned trips are offered appropriate support and flexibility.
