Ukraine Recaptures 400 sq km in Counteroffensive, Strikes Deep into Russia | Frontline Update

March 9, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Ukrainian forces have, for the first time since the start of 2024, regained more territory than Russian forces have captured in a single month, according to a statement from the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi. The announcement, made on March 9, 2026, signals a potential shift in momentum on the eastern front.

Syrskyi stated via social media that Ukrainian troops are “trying to seize the operational initiative and force the enemy to play by our rules.” This comes after a period where Russian forces have made incremental gains, particularly around the city of Avdiivka, which recently fell to Russian control after a prolonged and costly battle. The recent Ukrainian counter-offensive appears focused on disrupting Russian logistics and weakening their defensive lines.

Counter-Offensive Focuses on the Oleksandrivka Sector

The Ukrainian counter-offensive is currently concentrated in the Oleksandrivka sector, located at the intersection of the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Syrskyi reported that airborne assault troops in this area have reclaimed 285.6 square kilometers of territory within the past month. He added that a total of over 400 square kilometers have been recovered since the beginning of the operation in this sector.

The Oleksandrivka sector is strategically important as it lies within a region Russia views as crucial for consolidating its control over the Donbas region. Ukrainian efforts to destabilize this area could potentially disrupt Russian supply lines and limit their offensive capabilities further north.

Despite facing a numerical disadvantage – Syrskyi acknowledged a threefold numerical superiority for the Russian forces – Ukrainian troops are reportedly forcing Russia to postpone planned operations, patch gaps in its defense, and transfer troops from other areas. This suggests that Ukrainian tactical successes are creating pressure on Russian command and forcing them to reallocate resources.

Strikes Deep Inside Russia

Syrskyi also highlighted Ukraine’s continued targeting of objectives within Russia itself. He stated that Ukrainian forces launched 85 strikes against targets inside Russia in February alone. These attacks, he claims, have resulted in a 24.8 percent decrease in Russian oil refining capacity. This strategy reflects a broader Ukrainian effort to degrade Russia’s ability to sustain its war effort by targeting critical infrastructure.

The general specifically mentioned a recent missile attack on an arms factory in Votkinsk, Udmurtia, which produces Iskander-M and Oreshnik missiles. He also suggested that a 18 percent reduction in Russian use of First-Person View (FPV) drones in February is likely a result of Ukrainian strikes on enemy arsenals. This indicates a deliberate attempt to disrupt Russian military supply chains and limit their access to key technologies.

Syrskyi detailed the scale of Ukrainian firepower employed in February, stating that missile troops conducted 228 strikes, while Air Force aviation carried out 104 missions. Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) completed 293,800 combat missions. This demonstrates the increasing reliance on drone technology by both sides of the conflict, and Ukraine’s significant investment in its UAV capabilities.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, who assumed the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on February 8, 2024, replacing Valerii Zaluzhnyi, previously served as the commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces from 2019 to 2024. He also held the position of commander of the Joint Forces Operation from May to August 2019. His appointment signaled a desire for a renewed focus on operational planning and battlefield tactics.

The reported territorial gains and successful strikes within Russia represent a notable development in the conflict. While the situation remains highly fluid and the long-term impact is yet to be determined, the Ukrainian military appears to be demonstrating a renewed capacity to challenge Russian forces and regain lost ground. The ability to sustain this momentum will be crucial in shaping the future trajectory of the war.
