Ukraine War: Drone Attacks, Russian Strikes & Impact on Oil Supply

Ukraine War: Drone Attacks, Russian Strikes & Impact on Oil Supply

March 25, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Lviv, Ukraine – Russia has intensified its aerial attacks on Ukraine, with a recent surge in drone and missile strikes targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas. The attacks, which began in February 2022 with the full-scale invasion, continue to escalate, raising concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the potential for further regional instability.

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of Russian aerial assaults. On February 24, 2026, marking the fifth year of the conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that approximately 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. The BBC has independently confirmed the deaths of nearly 160,000 individuals fighting on the Russian side. These figures underscore the immense human cost of the war.

The eastern regions of Ukraine, particularly the Donbas area encompassing Luhansk and Donetsk, remain the focal point of Russian military operations. According to analysts at the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia gained approximately 4,700 square kilometers (1,800 square miles) of territory in 2025 – an area roughly twice the size of Moscow. Russian forces are attempting to secure full control of the Donbas, as well as the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, despite never having fully controlled these areas following attempted annexations in 2022.

The attacks are not limited to the eastern front. Lviv, a city in western Ukraine with UNESCO World Heritage status, was recently struck by a Shahed drone, causing damage to the historic center. This incident highlights the widespread nature of the conflict and the vulnerability of cultural landmarks. Earlier, on March 26, 2022, Lviv experienced significant bombardment, as documented in records dating back to the start of the invasion.

Ukraine has responded to the escalating attacks by targeting Russian oil terminals with drones and missiles. This strategy, as reported by RFI, aims to disrupt Russia’s ability to finance the war effort by impacting its energy sector. The effectiveness of this approach remains to be seen, but it signals a shift towards a more assertive Ukrainian posture.

The conflict has similarly seen the deployment of advanced weaponry and technologies. Reports suggest that Russia utilized the Oreshnik ballistic missile in a recent overnight assault on Ukraine, according to sources cited in YouTube reports. There is evidence that Elon Musk’s decision to restrict Russian access to Starlink satellite internet services in early February 2026 provided Ukraine with a tactical advantage, hindering the accuracy of Russian attacks.

The scale of recent attacks is particularly noteworthy. Orange News reported that Ukraine was targeted by nearly 1,000 Russian drones in a single wave, representing one of the most intense aerial assaults experienced throughout the conflict. Le Monde reported that Russia claimed to have intercepted and destroyed approximately 400 Ukrainian drones during a recent overnight operation.

The ongoing conflict has created a “fortress belt” running 50km (31 miles) through western Donetsk, according to the ISW. This defensive line indicates Ukraine’s efforts to consolidate its positions and prepare for potential further offensives. The situation remains fluid, with both sides engaged in a protracted struggle for control of territory.

The international community continues to monitor the situation closely. The conflict has far-reaching implications for regional security, global energy markets, and international relations. The continued bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure raises serious concerns about the protection of civilians and the preservation of cultural heritage. The war’s impact extends beyond Ukraine’s borders, contributing to broader geopolitical tensions and humanitarian challenges.

As the war enters its fifth year, the prospects for a peaceful resolution remain uncertain. The escalating attacks and the ongoing military operations suggest that the conflict is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. The focus now is on providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by the war, supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities, and seeking a diplomatic solution to end the violence.
