The landscape of undergraduate astronomy education is undergoing a quiet revolution. A new report from the American Astronomical Society’s (AAS) Education Committee Subcommittee on Undergraduate and Graduate Education (SURGE), authored by Kate Follette and a team of experts, reveals a surprising degree of inconsistency in degree requirements across the nation. While astronomy and astrophysics programs have exploded in popularity – with five times more degrees awarded in 2024 than in 2000 – a standardized curriculum remains elusive. This has significant implications for students considering a future in the field, and for the long-term health of astronomical research. While roughly half of students pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and half a Bachelor of Science (BS), the majority of departments offer both options. The perceived prestige of “Astrophysics” over “Astronomy” is as well a curious finding, with the former often seen as more demanding despite no concrete differences in course requirements. This perception, the SURGE team suggests, could lead departments to adopt the “Astrophysics” label for consistency. But the real issue lies deeper – in the core curriculum itself.

The Patchwork of Degree Requirements

The only universally required courses across all surveyed programs are differential and integral calculus, introductory mechanics, and introductory electricity and magnetism. Beyond that, the variation is substantial. Less than 10% of programs require statistics, despite its growing importance in data-driven astronomical research. Only around 30% mandate computer science coursework, a glaring omission given the increasing reliance on computational methods. This lack of standardization poses a challenge for ensuring that all graduates possess a foundational skillset. For students at institutions like the University of Illinois Chicago, or even smaller liberal arts colleges in the region, this variability could mean a significant difference in preparedness for graduate school or a career in industry.

The Importance of Research and Career Pathways

The SURGE report also sheds light on the crucial role of undergraduate research. While students demonstrate a strong appetite for research opportunities, the demand often outstrips the available mentorship from faculty and postdocs. This is a common challenge, and one that Chicago-area institutions are actively addressing through programs like Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). But, the report emphasizes the need for more sustainable models, such as integrating research into coursework and developing formalized mentoring structures.

Perhaps the most critical takeaway is the limited number of PhD positions available – only around 20% of graduating undergraduates can expect to continue their education at the doctoral level. This underscores the importance of preparing students for a wider range of career paths. The skills honed in an astrophysics degree – problem-solving, analytical thinking, data analysis, and communication – are highly transferable to fields beyond academia. The SURGE team rightly points out that departments need to prioritize developing industry and professional knowledge alongside traditional astronomical coursework. This is particularly relevant in a city like Chicago, with its diverse economy and thriving tech sector.
