US & Israel Strike Iran: Trump Calls for Regime Change – War Escalates?

US & Israel Strike Iran: Trump Calls for Regime Change – War Escalates?

March 1, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Tehran, Iran – A major military operation launched by the United States and Israel has resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to U.S. President Donald Trump. The attacks, described as “massive” and ongoing, targeted Iran’s leadership and military infrastructure, triggering a retaliatory response from Tehran that has escalated tensions across the Middle East.

Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles and drones towards Israel, as well as towards four Gulf Arab countries hosting U.S. Military bases: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. On Sunday, Israel reported launching fresh attacks “on the heart of Tehran” as Iranian attacks continued throughout the region.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury” by the U.S., comes after weeks of threats from President Trump regarding military action if Iran did not agree to a novel deal concerning its nuclear program. Trump has urged Iranian forces to lay down their arms and called on the Iranian people to rise up against their government, stating, “When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations.” He warned Iranian armed forces that they would face “certain death” if they did not comply.

The stated aim of the operation, according to Trump, is to “ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.” He further declared the intention to “destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground,” claiming it would be “totally obliterated.”

Initial strikes appeared to target the compound housing Ayatollah Khamenei in downtown Tehran, with videos circulating online showing the aftermath of the attacks. Damage was also reported in Isfahan, home to a nuclear research facility, though the extent of the damage remains unclear. The Iranian state media confirmed the death of Khamenei early Sunday.

The attacks represent a significant escalation in the long-standing tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful, a claim that has been met with skepticism by the U.S. And Israel, who fear Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

A three-person council has been established to temporarily lead Iran following Khamenei’s death, consisting of President Massud Peseshkian, Justice Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and cleric Alireza Arafi. This council will oversee the transition until the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 influential clerics, selects a permanent successor. The process of selecting a new Supreme Leader is expected to be complex and potentially destabilizing.

The immediate regional impact has been significant. Saudi Arabia has warned of retaliation should Iran launch further attacks on its territory. The Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atti cautioned against a wider conflagration in the region, warning of severe consequences for security and stability. The U.S. State Department has urged American citizens in the region to register with the crisis intake list, Elefand.

Reports indicate that several countries have been directly targeted by Iranian retaliatory strikes. A hotel in Dubai was reportedly hit by a missile, resulting in injuries. The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have announced a resumption of attacks in the Red Sea, targeting oil tankers. Initial reports from Iran suggest casualties, including claims of 85 children killed in a school strike, though these reports have not been independently verified.

The German government, having been informed of the attacks in advance, has called on Iran to cease its attacks against Israel and other regional partners, and to end its destabilizing activities.

The situation remains highly volatile and unpredictable. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the conflict can be contained or will escalate further, potentially drawing in other regional and international actors. The death of Ayatollah Khamenei introduces a new layer of uncertainty, as the future direction of Iran’s policies and its nuclear program remain unclear.
