US-Israel Strike: Satellite Images Show Damage to Iran Nuclear Facility

US-Israel Strike: Satellite Images Show Damage to Iran Nuclear Facility

March 3, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

The Iranian nuclear facility at Natanz has sustained damage following what appears to be a series of targeted strikes, according to commercial satellite imagery and statements from international observers. The attacks, which occurred between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning local time, represent the first known attacks on an Iranian nuclear site since the escalation of hostilities between the United States and Israel and Iran, beginning on February 28th.

Imagery provided by Vantor, a Colorado-based company specializing in satellite analysis, shows damage to entrance buildings at the underground Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) within the Natanz complex. According to the Institute for Science and International Security, the strikes targeted access points to the facility, which houses thousands of centrifuges used for uranium enrichment. Three buildings were reportedly destroyed, two of which serve as personnel entrances to the underground halls.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed “some recent damage” to the Natanz facility on Tuesday, stating that no radiological consequences were expected and that no additional impact had been detected at the FEP itself. The agency noted the facility had been “severely damaged” during a 12-day conflict between Israel and the US and Iran last year.

While the perpetrators of the latest attacks remain unconfirmed, they approach amid a broader military offensive launched by the US and Israel against Iran on Saturday. That offensive has resulted in at least 787 deaths across Iran, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, and has prompted retaliatory attacks by Iranian forces across the Middle East, resulting in casualties in multiple countries, including at least six US service members and eleven people in Israel.

The Natanz facility has long been a focal point of international concern regarding Iran’s nuclear program. It is one of three known uranium enrichment plants operating in Iran prior to strikes carried out by the US and Israel in June 2025. Both the United States and Israel have consistently expressed concerns that Iran is pursuing the capability to develop nuclear weapons, a claim Iran vehemently denies.

The timing of these attacks is particularly sensitive, occurring as negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear program remain stalled. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a multilateral agreement aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief, has been effectively defunct since the United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018. Efforts to revive the JCPOA have repeatedly failed, leading to increased tensions and a heightened risk of escalation.

David Albright, founder of the Institute for Science and International Security and a former UN nuclear inspector, was unable to determine whether the US or Israel was responsible for the strikes on the Natanz complex. He credited Israeli geo-analyst Ben Tzion Macales with first identifying the satellite imagery showing the damage.

The attacks on Natanz are likely to further complicate efforts to de-escalate the current crisis. Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA, Reza Najafi, previously stated on February 8th that Natanz had been attacked, a statement that now appears to be corroborated by the satellite imagery. Neither the White House nor the US Central Command have yet responded to requests for comment.

The international community is watching the situation closely, with concerns mounting that the escalating cycle of attacks and retaliations could spiral out of control. The Natanz facility’s vulnerability underscores the fragility of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and the potential for further disruption, raising questions about the future of Iran’s nuclear program and the broader stability of the region.

The attacks also highlight the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of military action in preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Critics argue that such actions are counterproductive, potentially accelerating Iran’s nuclear program and increasing the risk of a wider conflict. Proponents, however, maintain that military pressure is necessary to deter Iran from pursuing its nuclear ambitions.
