Utah Mom Convicted of Murdering Husband After Publishing Grief Book

Utah Mom Convicted of Murdering Husband After Publishing Grief Book

March 18, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

A Utah woman who gained attention after publishing a children’s book about grief following her husband’s death has been found guilty of his murder. Kouri Richins, 33, was convicted Monday of aggravated murder and four other felony counts in connection with the death of Eric Richins in March 2022. The case, which unfolded in Summit County, Utah, has drawn national scrutiny, raising questions about motive, financial instability, and the complexities of grief and loss.

The Case Against Kouri Richins

Eric Richins was found unresponsive by his wife, Kouri, at their home in Kamas, Utah, on March 4, 2022. She told investigators she’d made him a Moscow mule the night before and found him cold to the touch when she checked on him. The medical examiner determined Eric died from an overdose of fentanyl, finding five times the lethal level in his system. The drug was illicit, not a prescribed medication, and ingested orally. Prosecutors argued that Kouri Richins intentionally poisoned her husband, alleging she laced his drink with the fatal dose.

The investigation quickly focused on Kouri Richins, and a search of her electronic devices revealed a series of concerning online searches, including queries about lethal doses of fentanyl, how to avoid detection, and life insurance payouts. According to court filings, she as well exchanged messages with someone identified as C.L., requesting prescription pain medication, specifically asking for “something stronger” and referencing “the Michael Jackson stuff” – a reference to the anesthetic propofol that contributed to the singer’s death. Michael Jackson’s death was attributed to propofol overdose in 2009.

Further investigation revealed that Kouri Richins had taken out multiple life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge, and that Eric had quietly removed her as a beneficiary from his will after discovering she had accumulated significant debt in his name. Prosecutors presented evidence that Kouri was deeply in debt, facing financial pressures from her house-flipping business, and stood to gain financially from her husband’s death.

Financial Motives and a Changing Will

The prosecution painted a picture of Kouri Richins as someone driven by ambition and financial desperation. They alleged she misappropriated funds from Eric’s business and took out a substantial home equity loan without his consent. KPCW reports that Eric discovered these financial irregularities in 2020 and subsequently changed his will, removing Kouri as a beneficiary and placing his estate under the control of his sister for the benefit of their children.

This change in the will, prosecutors argued, provided a strong motive for Kouri to eliminate her husband. They presented evidence that she was aware of the altered will and reacted with anger when she learned she had been cut out of the inheritance.

The Children’s Book and Public Perception

The case took a particularly poignant turn when it was revealed that Kouri Richins had self-published a children’s book, Are You With Me?, a year after her husband’s death. The book, intended to help children cope with grief, was promoted in local media, where she spoke about the healing power of writing and the importance of supporting her children through their loss. NPR member station KPCW interviewed Richins in April 2023, where she described the book as a “distraction” from the pain of losing her husband.

The juxtaposition of her public persona as a grieving mother and the allegations of murder created a complex and unsettling narrative, fueling public interest and scrutiny.

Defense Arguments and the Jury’s Decision

Kouri Richins’ defense attorney, Wendy Lewis, argued that the investigation was flawed and driven by bias. She suggested that Eric Richins had a history of substance abuse and that his death could have been accidental. The defense also questioned the reliability of the evidence, pointing to inconsistencies in witness testimony and the lack of direct proof linking Kouri to the poisoning.

However, after three hours of deliberation, the jury found Kouri Richins guilty of aggravated murder and four other charges, including forgery and fraud. She faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The verdict was delivered on Monday, marking a significant development in a case that has captivated the nation.

What Comes Next: Sentencing and Further Legal Battles

Kouri Richins is scheduled to be sentenced on May 13, which would have been Eric Richins’ 44th birthday. Beyond the sentencing for her husband’s murder, she also faces 26 additional felony charges related to alleged financial crimes committed in the years leading up to his death. These charges include mortgage fraud, money laundering, and issuing bad checks. The Salt Lake Tribune reported on a key witness changing their story, which defense attorneys claim prosecutors deliberately withheld.

Richins is involved in ongoing civil litigation with Eric’s family over property and estate matters. The legal proceedings are likely to continue for some time, as the full extent of the financial and personal fallout from this case unfolds. The case highlights the complexities of investigating and prosecuting cases involving alleged financial motives and the challenges of discerning truth from deception in the wake of a tragic loss.

The conviction of Kouri Richins serves as a stark reminder of the potential for deception and the devastating consequences of betrayal, even within the context of grief and loss.
