Why It’s Hard to Share Joy: Maslow & Communicating Peak Experiences

Have you ever felt profoundly moved by a moment of joy, connection, or awe – a “peak experience” – and then struggled to convey its depth to someone else? It’s a surprisingly common challenge. While we readily share disappointments and frustrations, those extraordinary positive feelings often seem to slip through the grasp of language. As Abraham Maslow discovered decades ago, these peaks can be elusive even to ourselves, potentially leading to misunderstanding or dismissal from others. Understanding how to communicate these experiences isn’t merely about personal expression; it’s fundamental to strengthening our bonds with loved ones and fostering a deeper understanding of what it means to be human.

Maslow, a key figure in humanistic psychology, first began exploring peak experiences in the 1960s, observing that these moments weren’t limited to mystics or those engaged in spiritual practices. He found they could occur in everyday life – while listening to music, preparing a meal, or even waiting for a bus. His research revealed that individuals often described these experiences using remarkably similar language, regardless of their background or beliefs, hinting at a universal quality to these moments of profound fulfillment.

The Difficulty of Articulating the Ineffable

The core of the problem, Maslow realized, lies in the limitations of our language. Our everyday vocabulary is geared towards describing the mundane, the practical, and the often-negative aspects of life. It’s simply not equipped to capture the subtle nuances and overwhelming sensations of a peak experience. As Maslow’s biographer notes, he himself wrestled with this challenge, finding it challenging to share the emotions evoked by dreams and visionary insights. He argued that we lack the experiential vocabulary needed to truly understand and explore the full potential of human consciousness, particularly when it comes to somatic sensations – the physical feelings associated with these states – and not just uplifting thoughts.

This isn’t a novel observation. Maslow was seemingly unaware that Carl Jung had encountered similar difficulties decades earlier. Jung found that traditional verbal communication often fell short when attempting to access deeper layers of the psyche. He proposed that alternative methods, such as painting or sculpting, could facilitate bypass the limitations of language and tap into unconscious processes. Jung believed that “the hands know how to solve a riddle with which the intellect has wrestled in vain,” suggesting that creative expression can unlock insights inaccessible through purely rational thought.

Beyond Words: Techniques for Sharing Peak Experiences

Maslow attempted to address this communication gap through what he called “rhapsodic communication.” Recognizing that “sober, analytic” language was inadequate, he turned to metaphors, similes, and poetic speech to help individuals recall and describe their peak experiences more effectively. He encouraged interviewees to move beyond intellectualizing and instead focus on the physical sensations and emotional textures of the moment. Although, this approach remained largely undeveloped at the time of his death in 1970.

Building on Maslow’s and Jung’s insights, several techniques can help you share your own peak experiences more meaningfully. Consider these three approaches:

  • Artistic Expression: Following Jung’s advice, try drawing, painting, or sculpting your peak moment. Focus on colors and forms that evoke the emotions you felt, rather than striving for realistic representation.
  • Musical Interpretation: Use music to recount your experience. Play an instrument, sing, or chant, allowing the rhythm and melody to express the feelings that words cannot.
  • Improvisational Dance: Embrace the power of movement. Dance can be a powerful way to express the seemingly ineffable sensations of a peak experience, allowing your body to communicate what your mind struggles to articulate.

Sandplay Therapy: A Three-Dimensional Approach

Interestingly, Jung’s ideas evolved into a therapeutic technique known as sandplay therapy. Developed by his protégé, Dora Kalff, in the 1960s, sandplay involves creating a three-dimensional scene in a tray filled with sand, using miniature figures and objects. Clients are then encouraged to inform a story about the scene or simply express their feelings and associations. This method provides a non-verbal outlet for exploring complex emotions and experiences, offering a powerful alternative to traditional talk therapy. It directly resonates with Maslow’s concept of “rhapsodic communication,” providing a means to access and express experiences that lie beyond the reach of ordinary language.

The Importance of Somatic Awareness

Maslow emphasized the importance of focusing on bodily sensations when attempting to describe peak experiences. He often asked his students at Brandeis University and the Esalen Institute to describe what they physically felt when in love, urging them to move beyond intellectual analysis and tap into their visceral experience. He observed that many people in Western society lacked the awareness to articulate these sensations, highlighting a disconnect between mind and body. This emphasis on somatic awareness is increasingly recognized in modern psychology and mindfulness practices, which emphasize the importance of paying attention to physical sensations as a pathway to emotional understanding.

Peak Experiences and Well-being

Maslow believed that emotional health was strongly correlated with the frequency of peak experiences. The more emotionally well-adjusted we are, the more likely we are to experience these moments of profound fulfillment. He also noted that as we age, the intensity of peak experiences may diminish, giving way to a more sustained state of serenity he termed “plateau-experiences.” This suggests that the pursuit of well-being isn’t necessarily about chasing ever-more-intense experiences, but rather cultivating a stable foundation of emotional health that allows for moments of joy and connection to arise naturally.
