Yahoo Hong Kong News to End Publishing, Citing ‘Strategic Evaluation’

Yahoo Hong Kong News to End Publishing, Citing ‘Strategic Evaluation’

March 17, 2026 David Kessler - News Editor News

Yahoo Hong Kong is winding down its news operation in line with its “strategic evaluation and long-term business planning.” The move, announced Tuesday, will see the tech firm start a phased reduction of its media content starting in April, with a complete closure targeted for later this year.

The decision impacts approximately 40 to 50 employees, with around two-thirds receiving dismissal notices effective March 31, according to a staff member within Yahoo Hong Kong’s news division. For the next two months, Yahoo Hong Kong will rely on content from its existing news partners – NOW News, Oriental Daily and Agence France-Presse (AFP) – before ceasing original reporting altogether at the end of June.

A Shift in Strategy

The move comes as Yahoo reassesses its global business strategy, according to a statement provided by Above The Line, a PR firm representing Yahoo Hong Kong. The company maintains that the wind-down is not related to the political climate in Hong Kong, a point of sensitivity given the increasing restrictions on press freedom in the region. Instead, the company frames the decision as a result of “ongoing adjustments across our global business in line with long-term priorities.”

From Partnership to Original Reporting and Back Again

Yahoo Hong Kong launched in 1999, initially relying on content partnerships. In 2021, the platform made a significant investment in original reporting, filling a void left by the closures of independent news outlets like Apple Daily and Stand News following the implementation of the Beijing-imposed national security law. This pivot allowed Yahoo Hong Kong to establish itself as a trusted source of news, achieving the highest trust rating among online news platforms in Hong Kong, according to the 2025 Reuters Institute Digital News Report.

Impact on Hong Kong’s Media Landscape

The reduction in original news content from Yahoo Hong Kong represents a further contraction of the independent media landscape in Hong Kong. While the company will continue to operate its mail and search engine services, the loss of its news division will reduce the diversity of voices and perspectives available to the public. The reliance on partner content, while extending the service for a short period, raises questions about editorial independence and the potential for influence.

What Happens Next?

The immediate impact is job losses for approximately two-thirds of the 40-50 staff currently employed in Yahoo Hong Kong’s news division. Those affected have already been notified and will leave the company by the end of March. Over the next few months, Yahoo Hong Kong will transition to a model of curated content from its partners, NOW News, Oriental Daily, and AFP. The complete cessation of original reporting is scheduled for the end of June, marking a significant shift in the company’s presence in the Hong Kong media market.

Confirmed vs. Unclear

Confirmed: Yahoo Hong Kong will begin a phased wind-down of its news operation in April. Approximately two-thirds of the news division staff (40-50 employees) will be laid off by March 31. The company will transition to publishing content solely from its partners (NOW News, Oriental Daily, AFP) from April to June. Yahoo’s mail and search engine services will continue to operate.

Unclear: The specific long-term strategic goals driving this decision beyond the stated “ongoing adjustments” remain unclear. The extent to which the political climate in Hong Kong factored into the decision, despite denials from the company’s PR firm, has not been independently confirmed. The financial implications of the wind-down for Yahoo’s overall business are not detailed in the available reports.
