15-Year-Old Slovak Hockey Star Breaks Slafkovsky’s Finnish Junior Record
Tappara Tampere’s Max Melicherík is rapidly establishing himself as a force in Finnish junior hockey, surpassing even the impressive early career benchmarks set by Montreal Canadiens forward Juraj Slafkovský. The 15-year-aged Slovakian forward has already amassed 53 points – 27 goals and 26 assists – in 41 games this season for Tappara in the U18 SM-sarja, Finland’s top junior league.
That point total exceeds Slafkovský’s production at the same stage of his development. Playing for TPS Turku’s U18 team in the 2019-20 season, Slafkovský recorded 52 points (22 goals, 30 assists) in 39 games. Melicherík, with three regular season games remaining, has the opportunity to further extend his lead.
Melicherík’s ascent is particularly noteworthy given his age. He is the youngest player on Tappara’s U18 roster, alongside fellow Slovakian defenseman Tomáš Kohút and one of only two legionaries on the team. His performance has already earned him a place on the Slovak national team, where he has registered 11 points in three games with the U16 squad, 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) with the U17 team, and 11 points (1 goal, 1 assist) in 10 games with the U18 team.
The young forward’s impact isn’t limited to raw statistics. Currently ranked as the sixth-most productive player in the U18 SM-sarja, Melicherík has demonstrated a maturity and confidence that belies his years. “I’m very happy that I surpassed it, but I don’t really care about it that much,” Melicherík told JOJ Šport, demonstrating a remarkable level of focus. “I want to work on myself and improve every day.”
Melicherík’s story is rooted in a unique blend of international influences. Born in England, he followed in the footsteps of his father, Miloš Melicherík, a former professional hockey player who spent over 300 games in the Slovak Extraliga and twice won championships with Dukla Trenčín. Miloš later transitioned to a 12-season career with Guildford Flames in the United Kingdom, where he currently serves as a coach.
Despite his birth in England, Max’s hockey development took place in Trenčín, Slovakia. He quickly distinguished himself as a dominant force in Slovak youth hockey, amassing an astonishing 111 points in 29 games in the league for players under 16. The following year, he continued to excel against older competition, scoring against players four or five years his senior in the Slovakian junior league.
In January 2025, Melicherík made the significant decision to move to Finland and join Tappara Tampere, the reigning national champions. He immediately made an impact, showcasing both his scoring touch and his poise on the ice. His transition to Finnish hockey mirrors the path taken by Slafkovský, who also honed his skills in the U18 SM-sarja before being drafted first overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.
The parallels between Melicherík and Slafkovský are undeniable, and the young Slovakian is quickly drawing attention from scouts and hockey observers. While it’s still early in his career, Melicherík’s trajectory suggests he has the potential to become a significant player on the international stage. His upcoming participation in the U18 World Championships, co-hosted by Trenčín and Bratislava, will provide a high-profile platform to showcase his talent to a global audience.
Melicherík currently measures 188 centimeters (approximately 6’2”) and weighs 82 kilograms (approximately 181 pounds), possessing a frame that suggests he will continue to physically develop as he matures. His combination of skill, size, and a clear dedication to improvement positions him as one of the most exciting young prospects in European hockey.
