2026 Hybrid & Utility Iron Deep Dive: Fully Fit Club Tests Revealed

2026 Hybrid & Utility Iron Deep Dive: Fully Fit Club Tests Revealed

March 4, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

PHOENIX & CARLSBAD, Calif. – GOLF’s latest “Fully Fit 2026” initiative concluded its six-day deep dive into the latest golf equipment this week, offering a unique perspective on what’s best suited for players of varying abilities. The project assembled six GOLF content creators, subjecting them to full-bag fittings at six major club manufacturers. The goal: to provide insights that resonate with golfers seeking to optimize their equipment for the 2026 season.

The focus of this installment centers on hybrids and utility irons – the crucial clubs that bridge the gap between fairway woods and irons. Finding the right fit in this category is often a delicate balance, requiring players to consider distance control, launch characteristics, and overall versatility.

For some panelists, the search was about replacing a long iron with a more forgiving hybrid. For others, it was about finding a secondary wood option that offered a softer landing. The results, as detailed below, reflect a diverse range of preferences and playing styles.

Jack Hirsh’s Choices: Hybrid and Utility Iron

Jack Hirsh, a 2.4 handicap, opted for a Ping G440 3-hybrid (20° loft) with a Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 GOST Hybrid TX shaft. He also selected a Titleist U505 3-iron (20°) with a KBS Tour Lite S shaft as a utility iron. Hirsh emphasized the advantage of having a year’s experience with the G440 hybrid, despite identifying several other strong contenders during the fittings. He noted a carry distance of 254-224 yards with the hybrid, highlighting its versatility for both long approaches and controlled shots. The U505, he explained, provides a different kind of utility, allowing for low-flighted shots and greater control in windy conditions. His ball speed with the U505 reached 157 mph.

Jake Morrow’s Blend of Power and Control

Jake Morrow (0 handicap) chose a Ping iDi #3 (20°) with a Ping Tour 2.0 Black 90 X-Stiff shaft. Morrow, who hadn’t used a driving iron in some time, was impressed by the iDi’s ease of use and ability to produce both high and low ball flights. He praised the club’s versatility, particularly its performance on tight courses with hard fairways. The key benefit, he stated, was filling a significant loft gap in his set.

Johnny Wunder Sticks with a Trusted Hybrid

Johnny Wunder (2 handicap) remained loyal to his existing Ping G430 4-hybrid (22° loft) with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI HY 9X shaft. Wunder described the club as a “security blanket,” praising its consistent performance and ability to launch the ball high with predictable spin. He considered alternatives from Cobra and TaylorMade but ultimately stuck with the familiar G430, citing its efficiency and reliability.

Maddi MacClurg’s Forgiveness and Consistency

Maddi MacClurg (5.6 handicap) selected the Callaway Quantum Max 4-hybrid (21°) with a Denali Frost Silver 70G 6.0 shaft. MacClurg highlighted the club’s forgiveness and consistent ball speed, even on off-center hits. She emphasized the importance of reliability, particularly in competitive rounds, and expressed confidence in the Quantum Max’s ability to deliver consistent performance.

Sean Zak’s Versatility with a Utility Iron

Sean Zak (7.8 handicap) opted for a TaylorMade P-UDI 4-iron (22°) with a KBS Tour Lite S shaft. Zak appreciated the club’s versatility, noting its ability to produce different ball flights and its suitability for various course conditions. He emphasized the importance of filling a loft gap in his set and creating a more cohesive club configuration.

Wadeh Maroun’s Reliable Duo

Wadeh Maroun selected both a Callaway Apex UW 2021 (19°) with a Graphite Design Tour AD-VF Hybrid 95-S shaft and a Srixon ZXiU (18°) as his utility iron. Maroun has used the Apex UW for three years, trusting its performance on par 5s. He uses the ZXiU on courses where he needs a straight shot and consistent ball speed. He noted the high ball speed of the ZXiU and its optical illusion mirror back.

The “Fully Fit 2026” project underscores the importance of personalized club fitting. While there’s no single “best” club for everyone, the insights gleaned from these six golfers offer valuable guidance for players looking to optimize their equipment for the upcoming season.
