Alex Albon Reveals Delayed Proposal to Golfer Lily Muni He

Alex Albon Reveals Delayed Proposal to Golfer Lily Muni He

March 9, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Australian Grand Prix weekend provided more than just on-track action for Williams driver Alex Albon. Amidst preparations for the race in Melbourne, Albon shared the story of his recent proposal to professional golfer Lily Muni He, offering details about a carefully planned, yet ultimately spontaneous, moment.

The couple announced their engagement in January with a simple Polaroid-style photo and the caption, “I guess we’re stuck with each other now.” Albon revealed that the proposal wasn’t originally intended to happen when it did, explaining a series of logistical hurdles that led to a change of plans.

“I was planning to do it earlier,” Albon admitted during an on-stage conversation with teammate Carlos Sainz. “I was in Thailand, and then I went to Bhutan, and I was planning to do it there. The ring wasn’t ready. But then we went into a two-and-a-half-week training block.”

The timing proved problematic. Albon didn’t want to propose while in workout gear, and the environment of his training camp wasn’t conducive to a romantic gesture. “And I didn’t want to propose in my gym clothes,” he explained. “And where I go training isn’t pretty. It’s, like, proper dungeon style, really. So then I had to do a spontaneous one-day trip.”

That spontaneous trip led them to Substantial Sur, California. Despite the last-minute nature of the change, Albon acknowledged that the quick turnaround likely gave the surprise away. “We went to Northern California, Big Sur, it’s called. It’s a lovely area of the world. But I think when you do a one-day trip somewhere, due to the fact that I had to go back to the factory the next day to go back to work, she’s going to know.”

The proposal itself took place at night, under the stars. “It was nighttime, and we were looking at some stars, and that was it,” Albon recounted. He confirmed that he did, in fact, get down on one knee, completing “the whole shebang.”

The engagement comes after the couple has been together since 2019, having initially connected through social media, sparked by a mutual interest in each other’s respective sports. Muni He, a professional golfer, shared that she was surprised by the proposal, even noting with a laugh that her nails weren’t perfectly manicured, but “not awful either.” She described the off-season as “a really good” one.

While the personal milestone is a highlight, Albon’s focus has quickly returned to the challenges of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Williams has faced a difficult start, hampered by delays in the development of their new FW48 car. The team missed the scheduled pre-season testing in Barcelona due to these delays, putting them on the back foot heading into the season-opening races.

At the Australian Grand Prix, Albon finished 12th, while teammate Carlos Sainz finished 15th. Albon acknowledged the frustration but remained optimistic, drawing parallels to previous seasons where the team overcame similar obstacles. “It is frustrating,” he said after the race. “We’ve been in this position before. We’ve turned it around before.”

He emphasized that the team understands the areas needing improvement. “It’s not that we take solace in that, but we know that it’s not doom and gloom and that there is a positive conclude to this. It’s just about making it happen.” Albon pointed out that even in its current state, the car is a “good midfield car” in terms of weight, providing a foundation for future development.

Despite the early-season struggles, Albon’s ability to balance personal celebrations with professional commitments underscores his dedication to both his relationship and his racing career. As the season progresses, the focus will undoubtedly shift back to the track, but the story of his engagement offers a glimpse into the personal life of a rising star in Formula 1.
