Andy Diaz Wins World Triple Jump Title: Italy’s Champion Again

March 21, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

TORUŃ, Poland – Andy Diaz Hernandez has done it again. The Italian-Cuban athlete defended his world indoor triple jump title at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, on March 20, 2026, with a leap of 17.47m. It’s a mark that also stands as the best world performance of the year.

The victory echoes his triumph from March 21, 2025, in Nanjing, and solidifies Diaz’s position as the dominant force in the indoor triple jump. He secured Italy’s first medal of the championships, a promising start for the Italian team.

Diaz made a statement from the outset, nearly matching his winning distance in the first round, falling just 3.7cm short of his eventual winning mark. This early display of form set the tone for the competition, establishing him as the athlete to beat. Despite not improving upon his initial jump throughout the remainder of the competition – registering jumps of 16.91m, passing on subsequent attempts, and then 17.08m before passing again – his first-round effort proved sufficient to maintain his lead.

The competition wasn’t without its challenges. Jamaica’s Jordan Scott mounted a strong challenge, steadily improving with each jump, ultimately reaching 17.33m. Algeria’s Yasser Triki also demonstrated consistent performance, achieving 17.30m in his fourth attempt. However, neither could surpass Diaz’s initial leap.

Throughout the event, Diaz was closely supported by his coach, Fabrizio Donato, who observed from the stands. Donato’s guidance has been instrumental in Diaz’s success, providing a stable and supportive environment for the athlete’s development. Diaz credited Donato with giving him a “second life,” welcoming him into his home and providing crucial support.

This marks Diaz’s fourth major international medal. He previously secured Olympic bronze in 2024, European indoor gold in 2025, and the world indoor title last year in Nanjing. He joins an exclusive group of Italian athletes to achieve multiple titles at major championships, trailing only Gennaro Di Napoli, who won consecutive 3000m titles in 1993 and 1995, and Paolo Camossi, who won in Lisbon in 2001.

The victory is particularly poignant given Diaz’s recent struggles with injury. He admitted that his preparation for the championships had been hampered by a setback earlier in the year, leading him to craft a late decision to compete. “I wanted to win here, but I was not sure I could do it,” Diaz said. “All my season was affected by the injury I got at the beginning of the year. I made my final decision to compete at the World Indoors only after I performed okay at the national championships.”

Despite the challenges, Diaz was able to deliver a performance that showcased his exceptional talent and resilience. His smooth technique on the runway, described as “dancing” by observers, was a key factor in his success. The initial jump represented a significant improvement of 57cm over his season’s best, achieved at the recent Italian Indoor Championships.

Italy’s Andrea Dallavalle also competed in the event, finishing seventh with a jump of 16.90m. While not reaching the podium, Dallavalle’s participation demonstrates the growing strength of Italian triple jumping.

Looking ahead, Diaz has set his sights on breaking the world record, and he expressed a desire to achieve this feat on Italian soil. “Now I seek the world record, maybe in Italy,” he stated, hinting at future ambitions and a continued commitment to pushing the boundaries of the sport.

Diaz’s journey to the top is a compelling story of perseverance and opportunity. Having fled Cuba, he found a new home and a renewed sense of purpose in Italy, where he has flourished under Donato’s guidance. His success is a testament to the power of mentorship and the transformative potential of sport.
