Arsenal Beat Chelsea: Arteta’s Message, Set-Piece Success & Title Push

Arsenal Beat Chelsea: Arteta’s Message, Set-Piece Success & Title Push

March 2, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Emirates Stadium erupted on March 1st, 2026, as Arsenal secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Chelsea, reclaiming a five-point lead at the summit of the Premier League. The win, however, was far from straightforward, requiring a late save from David Raya and a nerve-wracking finish against a resilient Chelsea side even after Pedro Neto’s second-half dismissal.

The match, described by Mikel Arteta as a “proper London derby,” saw Arsenal dominate the first half, but only manage a single goal. William Saliba opened the scoring from a corner, continuing Arsenal’s impressive set-piece form this season. However, Chelsea quickly responded with an own goal from Piero Hincapie, leveling the score and injecting uncertainty into the encounter.

Jurrien Timber restored Arsenal’s advantage in the second half, again capitalizing on a corner – marking Arsenal’s 16th goal from a set piece this season, equalling a Premier League record shared by Oldham and West Brom. The goal arrived at a pivotal moment, particularly given Manchester City’s 2-1 win at Leeds earlier in the day, intensifying the pressure on Arteta’s side to maintain their lead.

Neto’s subsequent red card for a second bookable offense appeared to swing the momentum decisively in Arsenal’s favor. Yet, Chelsea refused to yield, forcing Raya into a stunning late save to deny Alejandro Garnacho. A goal subsequently ruled out for offside by Liam Delap only added to the tension in the closing minutes.

“The save that he (Raya) made in the last action, from what ended up being an unbelievable shot, my heart almost stopped,” Arteta admitted after the match. “But David’s hand was there to bring it back to life.” The manager’s candid reaction underscored the precarious nature of the victory and the relentless pressure of a title race.

Arteta acknowledged the team’s struggles to control the game despite the numerical advantage. “I try to stay calm, but obviously, we weren’t getting the dominance and the sequences of play that we wanted and would expect against 10 men. You have to navigate through that, and it’s a big part of the game. Everybody’s suffering because the margins are so minor.”

The victory wasn’t just about securing three points; it was about resilience and a refusal to buckle under pressure. Arteta revealed a key message delivered to the team at halftime, drawing parallels to their previous encounter against Tottenham. “I reminded them that we were in exactly the same position against Spurs seven days ago in that dressing room. They said, ‘Look what happened in the second half!’ So we’re going to do it again. But probably we’re going to have to go through some difficult patches to earn the right to win the game. We certainly did that.”

Arsenal’s success in converting set-pieces into goals has become a defining feature of their campaign. Arteta highlighted the importance of this aspect of their game, noting that “every team…look where they are in terms of the amount of goals that they score. And they have more quality in their score probably than anybody else to create.” He acknowledged a recent dip in set-piece goals but emphasized their importance in this particular match.

The win over Chelsea represents another significant step in Arsenal’s pursuit of their first Premier League title in 22 years. However, Arteta remains grounded, recognizing the challenges that lie ahead. The ability to grind out results, even when not at their best, as demonstrated against both Chelsea and Tottenham, will be crucial in the final stretch of the season.

The match too highlighted the growing importance of Raya in Arsenal’s setup. His late save proved to be the difference, reinforcing his value to the team and providing a moment of relief for Arteta and the Arsenal faithful. The manager’s post-match comments underscored the critical role the goalkeeper played in securing the victory.

While the victory was celebrated, Arteta also acknowledged the need for improvement. The team’s inability to fully control the game after Neto’s dismissal and the late pressure exerted by Chelsea served as a reminder that even in winning positions, complacency cannot be afforded. The manager’s focus will undoubtedly be on refining the team’s performance and ensuring they are prepared for the challenges that await.

The Gunners’ ability to secure wins even when not at their fluent best is becoming a hallmark of this title-chasing side. As Arteta noted, sometimes it’s about winning “ugly,” and against Chelsea, they did just that, demonstrating a grit and determination that will serve them well in the remaining games of the season.
