Arsenal Women 3-1 Chelsea: Dominant First Leg Win in Champions League Quarter-Finals
Arsenal secured a commanding 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final clash on . The win marks the team’s tenth consecutive victory across all competitions, establishing a significant advantage heading into the second leg.
The Gunners took the lead through a header from Stina Blackstenius, followed by a spectacular long-range strike from Chloe Kelly. While Lauren James pulled a goal back for Chelsea, Alessia Russo swiftly restored Arsenal’s two-goal cushion with a well-placed finish.
First Half Dominance
Chelsea started brightly, with Alyssa Thompson causing problems down the right flank. A cross from Thompson deflected off Katie McCabe and struck the post early in the match. Sandy Baltimore then fired wide, and James also hit the woodwork, demonstrating Chelsea’s early attacking intent.
Arsenal’s first clear opportunity arrived in the 18th minute when Beth Mead played a through ball to Blackstenius, but Hannah Hampton in the Chelsea goal was quick to close down the angle and make the save. However, Hampton couldn’t deny Arsenal for long.
In the 22nd minute, Blackstenius broke the deadlock, heading home an inswinging free-kick delivered by McCabe. The Swedish forward continued to threaten, having a low cushioned effort saved by Hampton shortly after.
Kelly then produced a moment of brilliance, receiving the ball from Mead, taking a touch to set herself, and unleashing a powerful shot from at least 25 yards out that flew past Hampton into the bottom right corner. The goal was celebrated with a knee slide in front of the Arsenal supporters.
Chelsea thought they had responded before halftime when Baltimore scored from a free-kick, but the goal was disallowed after the referee spotted a foul on Laia Codina.
Second Half Resilience
Arsenal made one change at the start of the second half, with Taylor Hinds replacing Codina and McCabe shifting to centre-back. The Gunners continued to press for a third goal, with Russo creating an opening but shooting straight at Hampton, and Blackstenius’ follow-up effort being blocked.
Olivia Smith entered the game in the 62nd minute, replacing Kelly. Chelsea managed to reduce the deficit in the 66th minute through James, who found the top left corner with a long-range effort.
Arsenal quickly re-established their two-goal lead in the 76th minute. McCabe, despite being on the ground, managed to get the ball forward to Blackstenius, who set up Russo for a brilliant finish into the bottom left corner, making it 3-1.
Further substitutions saw Frida Maanum and Smilla Holmberg replace Blackstenius and Mead, respectively. James continued to test Anneke Borbe from distance in the 89th minute, but the Arsenal goalkeeper was able to parry the shot past the post.
Chelsea had another goal ruled out in the closing stages, with the referee again deeming a foul on Borbe during a corner. Victoria Pelova then replaced Mariona Caldentey for Arsenal’s final substitution.
