Aryna Sabalenka Advances at Indian Wells After Win Over Himeno Sakatsume

Aryna Sabalenka Advances at Indian Wells After Win Over Himeno Sakatsume

March 7, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Indian Wells, CA – Aryna Sabalenka continued her winning ways at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday, defeating qualifier Himeno Sakatsume in straight sets. The World No. 1, playing her first match since a narrow defeat to Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final on January 31st, demonstrated her dominance with a March 7th victory of 6-4, 6-2.

Sabalenka had been enjoying a period of personal celebration leading up to the tournament, recently announcing her engagement to Brazilian businessman Georgios Frangulis on March 4th. The engagement, revealed via an Instagram post, drew congratulations from fellow tennis stars including Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Amanda Anisimova.

Against Sakatsume, the 27-year-old Belarusian quickly asserted her authority. She broke the 24-year-old Japanese player’s serve in the opening game, despite Sakatsume initially holding a 30-15 lead. Sabalenka consolidated the break and maintained the advantage throughout the first set, securing it 6-4 after 38 minutes of play. Although Sakatsume showed flashes of resilience, she struggled to uncover any consistent foothold on Sabalenka’s serve.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Sabalenka broke early and often, capitalizing on opportunities to extend her lead. She secured breaks in the third and fifth games, moving to a commanding 4-1 advantage. Sakatsume managed to win one additional game, but Sabalenka’s serve proved too strong to overcome. The set concluded 6-2, sealing the match for the top-ranked player.

The victory marked Sabalenka’s 82nd win in 100 matches played as the WTA’s No. 1 ranked player. It also propels her into the third round of the BNP Paribas Open, where she will face either Jaqueline Cristian or Maya Joint. A potential quarterfinal clash with either Iva Jović or Naomi Osaka looms further down the draw.

Sakatsume, who had previously upset Alycia Parks in the qualifying rounds, fought valiantly but ultimately proved unable to withstand Sabalenka’s power and precision. The Japanese player’s performance, while ultimately unsuccessful, demonstrated her potential and marked a significant achievement in reaching the main draw of a WTA 1000 event.

Sabalenka’s return to competitive play after her Australian Open final loss appears seamless. Having opted to skip tournaments in Doha and Dubai following the Grand Slam event, she appears refreshed and focused as she aims to build momentum heading into the clay court season. The engagement to Frangulis, CEO of the açaí superfood brand Oakberry, appears to have had a positive effect, with the player sharing joyful glimpses of her modern diamond ring on social media.

The win at Indian Wells is a strong indicator that Sabalenka remains a force to be reckoned with on the WTA tour. Her ability to quickly regain her form after a tough loss and navigate a challenging draw suggests she is well-positioned to contend for further titles throughout the year. The upcoming matches against Cristian or Joint will provide another test of her current form, while a potential showdown with Osaka would undoubtedly be a highly anticipated encounter.

The tournament has already seen a flurry of activity and excitement, with players like Paula Badosa, Coco Gauff, and Alcaraz offering their congratulations to Sabalenka on her engagement. The atmosphere in Indian Wells is electric, and Sabalenka’s presence adds another layer of star power to an already impressive field.
