Audi F1: Jonathan Wheatley Departs, Binotto Takes Charge & Aston Martin Link

Audi F1: Jonathan Wheatley Departs, Binotto Takes Charge & Aston Martin Link

March 22, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

HINWIL, Switzerland – A swift and unexpected shakeup has hit the Audi Formula 1 team just two races into its rebranded season. Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley has departed with immediate effect, a move fueled by reports linking him to a key role at Aston Martin as that team navigates its own leadership transition.

Audi confirmed Wheatley’s exit on Friday, citing “personal reasons.” However, the timing coincides with increasing speculation that Wheatley is poised to replace Adrian Newey in a similar capacity at Aston Martin. Newey, the highly respected technical architect behind Aston Martin’s recent surge, stepped back from day-to-day team principal duties last November, resuming his role as Executive Chairman and Managing Technical Partner.

Mattia Binotto, currently Head of the Audi F1 project, will assume Wheatley’s responsibilities as Team Principal in the interim. Audi stated it will take time to determine the long-term structure of its leadership, suggesting a significant overhaul is underway.

The departure marks the third major management restructure within Audi’s Formula 1 program in less than two years, highlighting the challenges the German manufacturer faces as it establishes itself in the sport. Wheatley, who joined the team – then Kick Sauber – last April, oversaw a period of improvement, including a podium finish for Nico Hulkenberg at Silverstone and a climb away from the bottom of the Teams’ Championship standings. He also spearheaded the transition from Sauber to the full Audi works team for the 2026 season.

Despite this initial progress, Wheatley’s tenure was cut short after only two races of the new campaign. Audi officials confirmed Wheatley is contractually obligated to a period of ‘gardening leave’ before joining a competitor, the length of which will be negotiated. A key factor in Wheatley’s decision appears to be a desire to return to the United Kingdom by the finish of the year.

Sources indicate Audi is unlikely to seek a direct replacement for Wheatley, instead favoring an appointment focused on race team operations, with Binotto retaining overall strategic control. This suggests a consolidation of power within the existing structure, prioritizing stability during a crucial phase of development.

At Aston Martin, the situation remains fluid. Team owner Lawrence Stroll has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Adrian Newey, emphasizing his importance as Managing Technical Partner. “I would like to reaffirm that Adrian Newey is my partner and an important shareholder,” Stroll stated. “He is AMR’s managing technical partner, and he and I have a true partnership built on a shared vision of success for the company.” Stroll also defended Aston Martin’s unique leadership structure, where Newey focuses on strategic and technical direction rather than day-to-day management.

The potential arrival of Wheatley would allow Newey to concentrate on his core strengths, freeing him from the administrative burdens of running the team. Aston Martin has struggled to meet expectations this season, currently last in the championship standings. The team’s car is lagging behind its rivals in development, and its new engine is plagued by vibration issues and performance deficiencies.

Reports suggest Stroll also recently met with former Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner, though sources indicate Newey is opposed to Horner joining Aston Martin. Newey and Horner’s relationship soured prior to Newey’s departure from Red Bull in April 2024.

The rapid sequence of events underscores the intense competition and high stakes within Formula 1. Audi’s ambition to become a front-running team has been met with immediate challenges, while Aston Martin is scrambling to stabilize its program and capitalize on Newey’s expertise. Wheatley’s potential move represents a significant shift in the competitive landscape, potentially bolstering Aston Martin’s technical capabilities while forcing Audi to reassess its leadership strategy.

The coming weeks will be critical as both teams finalize their plans and prepare for the next stage of the 2026 season. Audi faces the task of maintaining momentum despite the leadership change, while Aston Martin aims to unlock the full potential of its technical resources and return to the front of the grid.
