Australia Women’s Tour: Molineux to Captain, Sutherland Rested for West Indies Series
PERTH, Australia – Annabel Sutherland continues to rewrite the record books for Australian women’s cricket, but will receive a managed workload ahead of the T20 World Cup. The all-rounder’s dominant performance against India in the recent Test match at the WACA ground has been followed by a strategic decision to prioritize her fitness for upcoming tournaments.
Sutherland’s recent form has been nothing short of spectacular. She recently scored a century in the Test match against India at the WACA, alongside claiming six wickets. Her latest hundred was her third consecutive in Test cricket, a feat unmatched by any other woman in the history of the game. She is now the first Australian woman to hit four Test centuries, reaching the milestone in just her seventh Test match. Only England’s Jan Brittin has scored more tons in women’s Tests, with five.
Despite her incredible form, national selector Shawn Flegler announced that Sutherland will miss the upcoming tour of the West Indies as part of a proactive management plan. “Annabel will miss the series as part of a proactive management plan after a significant workload over the past 12 months, and we believe the extended rest will help ensure she’s at her best ahead of the World Cup,” Flegler said.
The decision reflects a broader strategy to manage player workloads in a demanding international schedule. Sutherland previously opted out of the Women’s Premier League with Delhi Capitals following the ODI World Cup and WBBL, demonstrating a commitment to prioritizing her long-term fitness.
The West Indies tour will also mark a new chapter for Sophie Molineux, who is progressing well after being ruled out of the final two ODIs against India and the Test match due to soreness. This tour will be her first as full cross-format captain following Alyssa Healy’s retirement. Although her availability for every game isn’t guaranteed, selectors are optimistic about her recovery.
“Sophie is progressing well and is expected to be available to play. We’ll prioritise the T20 matches and continue to assess her across the ODI series,” Flegler stated. Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath have been named as joint vice-captains should Molineux need to rest.
Flegler emphasized the importance of the tour as preparation for the T20 World Cup. “Being the final series before the T20 World Cup, it’s a great opportunity for the group to refine our plans against a challenging opposition,” he said. “This tour marks the beginning of a new era for the side, with Sophie taking the reins across all formats and a new-seem batting line-up following Alyssa’s retirement.” He added, “Sophie was terrific during the recent T20 series against India and has already begun shaping her leadership style and this tour will be another important step in continuing to define how she wants to lead the side.”
Several other players are set to feature prominently on the tour. Left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton, who impressed in the Perth Test, is in line for a T20I debut. Allrounder Nicola Carey has been retained following her recall for the India series, and Kim Garth has recovered from a quad injury. Flegler praised Hamilton’s smooth transition to international cricket, stating, “We’re really pleased with how well Lucy has transitioned to international cricket, she’s had a staggered introduction and we expect she’ll get an opportunity to show what she can do in the T20 format as well.”
Grace Harris has been omitted from the squad, but Flegler indicated she remains in contention for selection for the T20 World Cup. New South Wales wicketkeeper Tahlia Wilson has earned her first call-up as a reserve to Beth Mooney, though she will only join the tour after the WNCL final on .
The tour originally included a Test match, which would have been West Indies’ first against Australia in 50 years, but that match was ultimately dropped from the schedule. The ODI leg of the tour will carry Women’s Championship points, which are crucial for World Cup qualification.
The T20Is are scheduled to take place in St Vincent on , , and , followed by the ODIs in St Kitts on , , and .
