Australian Grand Prix 2024: F1 Season Begins with New Tech & Driver Battles

Australian Grand Prix 2024: F1 Season Begins with New Tech & Driver Battles

March 7, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Melbourne – The new Formula 1 season begins today, Sunday, with the 40th running of the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne, a track hosting the race for the second consecutive year.

The circuit is known for its difficulty in overtaking and its frequent reliance on the safety car, due to its relatively flat layout and open street course design that allows public access throughout the year.

The new season arrives amidst unprecedented technical changes to the car’s structure and power unit, now featuring an approximate 50:50 split in power delivery between a 1.6-liter V6 turbo engine and electrical power harvested from braking. This demands a new, often counterintuitive, driving style from the drivers.

In pre-season testing, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc of Monaco topped the timesheets, approximately 0.8 seconds ahead of young Italian, Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes. However, the German team remains the clear favorite to win, particularly given the presumed advantages of their engine.

British driver George Russell affirmed that the car is performing as expected and that on-track performance aligns with wind tunnel data, positioning him as a leading contender should Mercedes demonstrate its superiority on the track.

Meanwhile, Ferrari hopes to secure its first victory on Australian soil since 2022, capitalizing on the car’s lightness and a smaller turbocharger that provides quicker launches.

Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton of Britain stated that winter testing yielded significant learning and tangible performance improvements for the team.

Focus also remains on local favorite Oscar Piastri of McLaren, who seeks to avenge his loss of the championship last year to teammate Lando Norris.

During official qualifying, Mercedes dominated the front of the grid, with Russell and Antonelli securing the first and second positions, respectively. Frenchman Isaac Hajar, driving for Red Bull, took third.

Red Bull Racing, led by four-time World Champion Max Verstappen of the Netherlands, remains uncertain of its position within the new power order. Verstappen emphasized the need for increased speed and learning from previous experiences in Bahrain.

Aston Martin does not express high expectations for finishing the race, with new team principal Adrian Newey noting that the Honda power unit is causing vibrations that could harm the hands of its drivers, Spaniard Fernando Alonso and Canadian Lance Stroll, adding further question marks before the race begins.

With all these changes to the cars and the new driving style, in addition to the usual weather factors and risks in Melbourne, the 2026 Australian Grand Prix promises an exciting start to a new era of Formula 1, where excitement and challenges converge on and off the track.

The opening race of the season is particularly challenging for drivers’ body clocks, as Alexander Albon of Williams noted. Albon, speaking on the Team Torque podcast, highlighted the disruption to circadian rhythms caused by the early start time in Melbourne, with the first free practice session scheduled for 2:30 AM local time on Friday, March 14th. This is followed by a second free practice session at 6:00 AM.

The demanding schedule doesn’t let up, as the Formula 1 paddock travels directly to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix just one week after Melbourne. A week without racing follows, allowing teams and drivers to return to their European bases before heading to Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix. This “Australia-China-Japan” marathon, as Albon described it, will be a significant physical test for all involved.

The 2026 season officially kicks off with these first three races, setting the stage for a year of intense competition and strategic battles. The early performance in Australia will be crucial in gauging the effectiveness of the extensive winter testing and the adaptation to the new technical regulations. Teams like McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari appeared strong in testing, while Red Bull remains somewhat of an unknown quantity, and Aston Martin faces considerable challenges.

The Australian Grand Prix, as the opening round, is not just a test of speed and reliability but also a crucial opportunity for teams to establish momentum and set the tone for the long season ahead. The unique characteristics of Albert Park, combined with the new car specifications, promise a thrilling and unpredictable race, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Formula 1 history.
