Australian Woman Injured in Philippines Bridge Collapse: Recovery Fundraiser
Australian Tourist’s Dream Trip Turns Nightmarish After Bridge Collapse in Philippines
A holiday intended to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience took a harrowing turn for Jennifer Keenan, a 32-year-old from Queensland, Australia. While island-hopping in the Philippines, a makeshift bridge collapsed beneath her, leaving her trapped underwater and seriously injured.
Keenan was nearing the finish of a three-day boat tour from Coron, Palawan, having just completed a village visit where she participated in a basketball game with locals and immersed herself in the local culture. As she walked towards a bridge connecting the shore to the tour vessel on , the structure unexpectedly gave way.
According to a GoFundMe account established to support her recovery, Keenan was thrown into the water and pinned by large, sharp concrete blocks. The collapse occurred on a platform constructed of aging concrete slabs and wooden planks. “It took multiple people to pull her out, revealing the extent of her injuries — including a pole that had pierced through her leg and severe damage to her ankle,” the GoFundMe description detailed. Limited immediate medical access meant a significant delay before she could reach a hospital.
The ordeal, described by Keenan as “like a war zone,” required three surgeries to address her injuries. Speaking through tears to news.com.au, Keenan recounted the terrifying experience. She is currently battling a parasitic infection contracted from the pole that penetrated her leg, requiring ongoing antibiotic treatment.
“I’ve needed three surgeries and to clean my wounds, since there was a parasite in my leg from the pole. My right ankle is cracked where all the skin came back and I am just on antibiotics non-stop to kill this thing [parasite] inside me,” Keenan said.
The incident highlights the risks associated with relying on improvised infrastructure in certain tourist destinations. While the Philippines is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and warm hospitality, the collapse underscores the importance of safety standards and maintenance of tourist facilities.
Keenan is now focused on returning home to Queensland for continued medical care and rehabilitation. The GoFundMe campaign aims to alleviate the financial burden of her extensive medical expenses and the logistical challenges of international travel while recovering from such severe injuries. The campaign emphasizes Keenan’s character, describing her as “a kind, adventurous, and generous person” who now requires support from others.
The collapse occurred during the final stop of a three-day island boat tour originating from Coron. The tour group had been enjoying a series of cultural experiences, including interacting with local communities. The sudden and unexpected failure of the bridge transformed a joyful excursion into a life-threatening situation.
The severity of Keenan’s injuries and the harrowing circumstances of the accident have drawn attention to the need for improved safety measures at tourist sites in the region. While the Philippines attracts millions of visitors annually, ensuring the structural integrity of access points like bridges and platforms is crucial for protecting tourists from preventable harm.
As Keenan continues her recovery in Manila, the focus remains on her safe return to Australia and the long road ahead. The GoFundMe campaign serves as a testament to the power of community support in times of crisis, offering a lifeline to a traveler whose dream vacation turned into a nightmare.
