Bills Trade for Bears’ DJ Moore: Grading the Deal & Fantasy Impact

Bills Trade for Bears’ DJ Moore: Grading the Deal & Fantasy Impact

March 6, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The Buffalo Bills have made a significant move to bolster their receiving corps, finalizing a trade with the Chicago Bears for wide receiver DJ Moore, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday. The deal, which cannot be officially completed until the start of the league year on March 11, sends a 2026 fifth-round pick to Buffalo while the Bills will send their 2026 second-round pick (No. 60) to Chicago.

The acquisition of Moore addresses one of Buffalo’s most pressing needs heading into the 2026 season and marks the first major personnel decision under new head coach Joe Brady, who was promoted from offensive coordinator on January 27. More importantly, it provides quarterback Josh Allen with a proven, reliable target – a role that has been somewhat inconsistent for the Bills in recent years.

For Moore, the trade represents a change of scenery after what he described as his least productive season to date, recording 50 receptions for 682 yards and six touchdowns. Despite the lower yardage total, the 24th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Maryland will join his third NFL team. Notably, he has a pre-existing rapport with Brady, having thrived under his tutelage for two seasons (2020-2021) while both were with the Carolina Panthers.

Familiarity Breeds Opportunity: Moore and Brady Reunited

The connection between Moore and Brady is a key element of this trade. During their time together in Carolina, Moore surpassed 1,150 receiving yards in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons. That established chemistry is expected to translate quickly in Buffalo, providing Allen with an immediate and trusted weapon.

“The Bills grasp exactly what they are getting in Moore because Brady was his OC in Carolina for two of the best seasons of Moore’s career,” explained ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg. “He catapults into the role of Buffalo’s No. 1 receiver and also offers a different skill set from some of the other players in the room. Moore has speed and the ability to create separation and stretch the field.”

Getzenberg also highlighted Moore’s durability, noting he is the only wide receiver in the league to have appeared in all 17 games for the past five seasons. This reliability is a valuable asset for Allen, who has faced inconsistency at the receiver position in recent years.

Does the Trade Position Buffalo for a Deeper Playoff Run?

The addition of Moore undoubtedly improves the Bills’ offense, but the cost – a second-round pick – raises questions about whether the team overpaid. Buffalo currently possesses seven draft picks, and parting with a second-rounder in a year where they are also undergoing a defensive scheme change and have needs at pass rusher is a significant investment.

“There’s more work for the Bills to do in terms of clearing cap space but investing in the wide receiver position is something the team needed to do this offseason,” Getzenberg added. “Moore has the skill set to be a positive addition to this offense, but whether he was the right player to invest this highly in will be a question going into the season.”

The Bills have also guaranteed $15.5 million of Moore’s salary through 2028, a commitment that signals their long-term belief in the receiver and his fit within the offense. ESPN’s Dan Graziano noted this guarantee is somewhat surprising given Moore’s recent performance and the lack of a no-trade clause in his contract.

Chicago’s Post-Trade Strategy: Center of Attention?

The trade isn’t just beneficial for Buffalo. The Bears, having moved Moore and recently retired center Drew Dalman, have created significant salary cap space and acquired an additional second-round pick. This financial flexibility and draft capital position them to pursue top free agents, particularly at the center position.

“Chicago now has ample salary cap space and an additional second-round pick to address these needs,” said ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. “They could potentially target elite free agent centers like Tyler Linderbaum, who league sources believe will command a contract exceeding $22 million per year.”

Cronin emphasized the importance of the center position to the Bears, particularly in relation to quarterback Caleb Williams. The team’s increased use of play-action and Williams operating under center 49% of the time in his second season underscores the require for a reliable and skilled center.

The Impact of Emerging Talent on Chicago’s Decision

The emergence of rookie receivers Luther Burden and tight finish Colston Loveland also played a role in the Bears’ willingness to trade Moore. Both players demonstrated significant potential during the 2025 season, with Loveland leading the team in receiving yards (713) and Burden showcasing explosive playmaking ability.

“With Burden, Loveland and Rome Odunze in the fold, Moore became a luxury on a team where his role had changed since he was traded to Chicago in 2023,” Cronin explained. “Moore was used as a run-after-catch receiver, but those targets dipped significantly in 2025.”

Draft Capital and Defensive Reinforcements for the Bears

The Bears now have four draft picks within the top 89 selections, providing them with the opportunity to address needs on both sides of the ball. ESPN’s Matt Miller suggested they could package picks in a blockbuster trade for a veteran player, potentially a pass rusher, or use the additional second-rounder to bolster their defense, specifically at the safety position.

“In a deep safety class, USC’s Kamari Ramsey could step into a lineup that currently doesn’t have a starting safety under contract for next season,” Miller noted.

the trade appears to be a win for both teams, albeit in different ways. The Bills gain a proven receiver to complement Josh Allen, while the Bears acquire valuable draft capital and cap space to address multiple needs. The success of the trade will depend on how effectively each team utilizes its newfound resources in the coming months.
