Brock Lesnar Reveals Story Behind Massive Chest Tattoo

Brock Lesnar has revealed a surprising story behind one of the most recognizable features in professional wrestling and mixed martial arts: the large sword tattoo emblazoned across his chest. The former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE superstar detailed a night of heavy drinking and impulsive decision-making that led to the permanent body art.

Lesnar, known for his imposing physique, explained on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast that the tattoo was the result of a particularly rough patch in his life. He was in Scottsdale, Arizona, training for a potential NFL career, but had recently suffered a motorcycle accident. “I got that tattoo, I was s—-faced drunk in Scottsdale, Arizona,” Lesnar confessed. “I was in Scottsdale, training for the NFL, had just gotten in a motorcycle accident. I was just kicked down hard. I was going through all that stuff.”

The circumstances surrounding the tattoo’s creation were hazy, even for Lesnar himself. He recalled being near a tattoo shop after leaving a biker bar and making a spur-of-the-moment decision. “There was a tattoo shop across the street from the biker bar and that’s not a good place to have a tattoo shop. I got this tattoo, I didn’t even know I got the damn thing. I wake up the next day, and I’m like ‘what in the [hell] is this thing?’”

Despite the inebriated state in which it was acquired, Lesnar offered insight into the symbolism behind the sword. He described feeling cornered and under pressure, as if facing a threat. “The meaning behind it was, I felt like my back was against the wall and somebody had a sword, a knife stuck to my throat. Like, ‘what are you going to do now?’ I walked over there, and I said, ‘Let’s put a considerable a– ugly sword on my chest.’”

The story provides a glimpse into a vulnerable moment for the typically stoic Lesnar, revealing a period of personal struggle and a reckless reaction to it. The tattoo, now an iconic part of his image, serves as a permanent reminder of that time.

According to Lesnar, White initially dismissed his attempts to enter the organization. “Dana White wanted nothing to do with me. He wouldn’t return my calls,” Lesnar said on the podcast.

Determined to get a shot in the UFC, Lesnar took a rather unconventional approach. He purchased tickets to a UFC event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, headlined by Randy Couture and Gabriel Gonzaga. After Couture’s victory, Lesnar bypassed security and confronted White directly in the Octagon. “I bought four nosebleed tickets to the MGM Grand, where Randy Couture was headlining against Gabriel Gonzaga for the heavyweight championship. I sat there in the stands through the entire event, and as soon as Randy won that fight, I scaled the security, ran to the Octagon, grabbed Dana, and I introduced myself. We went to the back, and he says, ‘Well, listen, I’ll give you a shot.’”

That “shot” came in February 2008 against Frank Mir at UFC 88. While Lesnar suffered a 90-second submission loss in his debut, the event generated significant pay-per-view revenue. Impressed by the numbers, White immediately offered Lesnar a long-term contract, recognizing his potential to draw fans to the sport. The fight, though a loss, proved to be a pivotal moment in Lesnar’s career.

Lesnar’s early UFC career was marked by both success and setbacks. He went on to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship, defeating Randy Couture in a rematch in 2009. Yet, his career was also interrupted by health issues, including diverticulitis, which ultimately led to his departure from the UFC in 2011. He returned to WWE, where he continues to compete today.
