Brumbies Thrash Chiefs in Slipper’s Record-Breaking Super Rugby Match

Brumbies Thrash Chiefs in Slipper’s Record-Breaking Super Rugby Match

March 21, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

CANBERRA, Australia – James Slipper etched his name into Super Rugby history Friday night, becoming the competition’s most-capped player with his 203rd appearance. The veteran prop led the ACT Brumbies to a thrilling 33-24 come-from-behind victory over the Waikato Chiefs at GIO Stadium, a fitting celebration of a remarkable career.

Slipper surpassed former All Black Wyatt Crockett’s previous record of 202 caps, a milestone acknowledged with a guard of honour from both teams before kickoff. The 36-year-old debuted for the Queensland Reds in 2010 and has since become a mainstay of Australian rugby, earning 151 test caps for the Wallabies before retiring from international play last year. He joined the Brumbies in 2019 and was presented with a special jersey bearing the number one in gold to mark the occasion.

While Slipper’s individual achievement was the focal point, the match itself was a captivating contest. The Brumbies initially surged ahead with an early try from Hudson Creighton in the fourth minute. However, the Chiefs responded effectively, with winger Liam Coombes-Fabling crossing for two first-half tries, establishing a 17-7 lead at the break. Coombes-Fabling’s strong performance continued into the second half, contributing to the Chiefs’ growing advantage.

The Chiefs extended their lead further, with Damian McKenzie, a constant threat throughout the evening, scoring a try in the 56th minute to push the visitors ahead by 17 points. McKenzie finished the night with one try, 25 passes, and 70 metres gained, showcasing his dynamic playmaking ability. But the Brumbies refused to yield.

A dramatic shift in momentum occurred as the Brumbies launched a spirited fightback. Captain Ryan Lonergan sparked the revival with a try, capitalizing on a loose ball to narrow the gap. Charlie Cale then added another five-pointer, picking up the ball from a ruck and powering over the line, bringing the Brumbies within striking distance.

The defining moment arrived in the 79th minute when Corey Toole intercepted a pass and sprinted the length of the field to score the match-winning try. The late surge was completed after McKenzie missed a penalty goal with less than five minutes remaining, a miss that proved costly for the Chiefs.

“The ones where you don’t win and you’ve got a milestone just don’t experience the same,” Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham said after the match. “It was great to see the boys play the way they did in that second half.” Larkham highlighted the team’s resilience and determination, noting the confidence gained from securing such a hard-fought victory.

The win avenges last year’s semi-final defeat to the Chiefs, where the Brumbies were convincingly beaten 37-17. It also provides a much-needed boost for the Brumbies, who had lost their previous two matches and relinquished their position at the top of the Super Rugby Pacific ladder.

“Everyone was screaming to run, and then he (Toole) almost got chased down by McKenzie,” Larkham added, acknowledging the dramatic finish and the individual brilliance of Toole’s game-winning intercept.

Despite the defeat, Chiefs captain Luke Jacobson acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. “I definitely feel like we could have won the game tonight… so we’ve got to be better there,” he said. “I’m pretty frustrated. We just weren’t able to build enough continuity in our attack.”

Slipper’s milestone match was more than just a celebration of longevity. it was a testament to his dedication and professionalism. Having played for both the Reds and the Brumbies, he is now on the cusp of becoming the first player to reach 100 appearances for two different Super Rugby teams, should he feature in the upcoming match against the New South Wales Waratahs. His career continues to inspire, demonstrating the enduring power of experience and commitment in a demanding sport.
