Canucks Battle, Fall to Hurricanes: Hronek, Pettersson & Rossi Shine in 6-4 Loss
VANCOUVER – The Carolina Hurricanes held off a determined Vancouver Canucks squad 6-4 at Rogers Arena on Wednesday night, a game that saw a flurry of offense and a late push from the home team. Nikolaj Ehlers led the way for Carolina with a hat trick, although Filip Hronek and Elias Pettersson each recorded multi-point games for Vancouver in a losing effort.
The Hurricanes came out strong, capitalizing on an early tripping penalty called against David Kampf just 27 seconds into the game. Less than a minute into the power play, Carolina opened the scoring. Despite a recent five-game streak of scoring first at home for the Canucks, the Hurricanes quickly disrupted that trend.
The first period saw a significant shot disparity, with Carolina dominating early on, 12-1 through the first 12 minutes. However, the Canucks began to find their footing, generating some offensive chances of their own. Linus Karlsson played a key role in setting up the Canucks’ first goal, drawing an interference penalty late in the period. On the ensuing power play, a centering pass deflected off a Carolina defender and into the net, tying the game 1-1.
The momentum continued to swing in Vancouver’s favor as they scored again less than a minute later. Karlsson’s strong play along the boards led to a pass back to Filip Hronek, who unleashed a powerful slap shot to give the Canucks a 2-1 lead. Hronek’s performance marked a three-point night for the defenseman.
The second period, however, saw the Hurricanes regain control. Sean Walker quickly tied the game at 2-2 early in the frame, and Nikolaj Ehlers followed up with a goal to place Carolina back in the lead, 3-2. Sebastian Aho then extended the Hurricanes’ advantage to 4-2, prompting a goaltending change for Vancouver, with Nikita Tolopilo replacing Kevin Lankinen.
Tolopilo’s debut was immediately challenged, as Ehlers scored again, making it 5-2 for Carolina. The Canucks didn’t fold, though, and managed to cut into the deficit with a power-play goal from Brock Boeser, assisted by Marco Rossi, bringing the score to 5-3.
The third period saw a renewed push from the Canucks. Nils Höglander scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Elias Pettersson, bringing Vancouver within one goal, 5-4. Pettersson had a strong game contributing with multiple points and demonstrating a noticeable increase in effort. David Kampf also made a crucial defensive play, preventing a goal with a sweeping save on the goal line.
Despite the late surge, the Canucks couldn’t complete the comeback. A late penalty against Teddy Blueger put Carolina on the power play, and with Vancouver pulling their goalie for an extra attacker, Ehlers completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal in the final seconds, sealing the 6-4 victory for the Hurricanes.
“I don’t believe we love that game; gave up way too many big chances and made Bussi work for it tonight and just didn’t play 100 percent our way and the way we necessitate to play,” Ehlers said after the game. “I thought we came out really good, and then they kind of took over and after that, there was a lot of back and forth. So, we got some things we need to clean up.”
Carolina’s Brandon Bussi made 18 saves in the win, improving to 25-3-1 on the season, tied for third in the NHL in wins despite playing fewer games than most of the league’s top goaltenders. Bussi acknowledged he could have been better, but praised his team’s sacrifice and ability to create offense. “I could have been a little better so that game didn’t get to 5-4 and we’re hanging on the last minute there but I loved our sacrifice, our ability to buy in, we created a lot of offense, and for the most part we prevented them from getting chances,” Bussi stated.
The Hurricanes have been impressive lately, going 11-1-2 in their past 14 games, and this win pushes their record to 39-16-6. While the Canucks battled hard, they fell to 31-24-8. Despite the loss, the Canucks showed resilience and offensive flashes, particularly from players like Karlsson, Hronek, Pettersson, and Boeser. The team will glance to build on these positives as they continue their season.
