Capitals Beat Flames 7-3: McMichael Scores Twice | NHL Recap

Capitals Beat Flames 7-3: McMichael Scores Twice | NHL Recap

March 10, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

WASHINGTON – The Washington Capitals rediscovered their scoring touch Monday night, snapping a three-game losing streak with a decisive 7-3 victory over the Calgary Flames. A balanced offensive attack, led by a multi-goal performance from Connor McMichael, propelled the Capitals to their seventh win in their last ten games.

McMichael’s two goals were pivotal in the win, ending a personal seven-game goal drought and providing crucial momentum shifts for Washington. Justin Sourdif contributed a goal and two assists, while Hendrix Lapierre added a goal and an assist of his own. Tom Wilson, Ethen Frank, and Ryan Leonard as well found the back of the net for the Capitals.

Calgary, meanwhile, continued to struggle, dropping their fifth game in the last six. Matvei Gridin, Blake Coleman, and Yegor Sharangovich scored for the Flames, but their offensive efforts were ultimately overshadowed by Washington’s relentless attack and defensive resilience.

The Capitals came out firing, dominating the first period and building a commanding 3-0 lead. Lapierre opened the scoring just 2:46 into the game, capitalizing on a rebound from Martin Fehervary’s shot. The early goal set the tone for the period, with Washington maintaining sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Wilson extended the lead with a bouncing puck that eluded Flames goaltender Devin Cooley, and McMichael completed the first-period onslaught with a well-placed shot from the slot.

The second period saw a dramatic shift in momentum as the Flames mounted a spirited comeback, tying the game with three consecutive goals. Gridin initiated the rally, converting a backdoor feed from Olli Maatta. Ryan Strome, playing against his brother Dylan, earned an assist on the play, continuing a strong performance since his recent trade to Calgary. The Flames then capitalized on a pair of Washington turnovers, scoring two short-handed goals in quick succession. Coleman broke free on a breakaway, and Sharangovich finished a play set up by Joel Farabee, leveling the score at 3-3.

However, the Capitals regained control in the third period, demonstrating their ability to respond under pressure. McMichael scored his second goal of the night, restoring Washington’s lead. Just 23 seconds later, Sourdif’s shot found its way past Cooley, extending the Capitals’ advantage. Frank then added an empty-net goal late in the game to ice the victory. Leonard capped off the scoring with a breakaway goal in the final seconds, extending his point streak to three games.

Logan Thompson was solid in net for Washington, stopping 22 of 25 shots faced. Cooley, despite allowing seven goals, made 22 saves for Calgary. The goaltending matchup highlighted the contrasting fortunes of the two teams, with Thompson providing stability for the Capitals while Cooley faced a barrage of offensive pressure.

The win was particularly significant for the Capitals, who had been struggling to find consistency in recent games. The offensive explosion and strong team performance offered a much-needed boost as they head towards a Wednesday matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. For the Flames, the loss raises concerns about their recent form and ability to compete consistently in a challenging Western Conference. They will glance to rebound on Tuesday when they visit the New York Rangers.

Washington’s victory was also notable for the integration of new acquisition David Kampf, though he remained a spectator Monday night while navigating immigration procedures. His presence as the fourth-line center is expected to add depth and stability to the Capitals’ lineup once he is cleared to play.

The Capitals’ ability to capitalize on offensive opportunities and respond effectively to Calgary’s second-period surge proved to be the difference in the game. The balanced scoring attack, combined with Thompson’s steady goaltending, provided a recipe for success that the Capitals will look to replicate in their upcoming contests. The Flames, will need to address their defensive vulnerabilities and find a way to generate more consistent offense if they hope to turn their season around.
