Cardinals Extend Manager Oli Marmol: Details of New Contract | MLB News

Cardinals Extend Manager Oli Marmol: Details of New Contract | MLB News

March 1, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals and manager Oliver Marmol have agreed to a two-year contract extension, securing his position through the 2028 season with a club option for 2029. The announcement comes as Marmol was entering the final year of his current contract, signaling a strong vote of confidence from the organization despite recent struggles.

Marmol, March 1st, 2026, initially took the helm following the departure of Mike Shildt in October 2021. His first full season, 2022, proved remarkably successful, with the Cardinals claiming the division title with a 93-win season. That success was largely fueled by exceptional performances from Paul Goldschmidt, who earned the National League MVP award, and Nolan Arenado, who finished third in voting. However, the team’s postseason run was short-lived, falling to the Philadelphia Phillies in the Wild Card round without securing a single victory.

The subsequent years have presented significant challenges. The 2022 season also marked the end of Yadier Molina’s storied career, ushering in a period of transition for the Cardinals. While the acquisition of Willson Contreras behind the plate aimed to fill the void, the pitching staff struggled to adjust to life without the nine-time Gold Glover. Simultaneously, both Goldschmidt and Arenado experienced a decline in performance, and injuries to key contributors like Brendan Donovan and Tyler O’Neill further hampered the team’s progress. The result was a 91-loss campaign in 2023, marking a significant fall from grace.

The Cardinals showed marginal improvement in 2024, finishing with an 83-79 record and a tie for second place in the NL Central. However, they regressed again in 2025, falling below .500. Despite these difficulties, the organization has consistently expressed support for Marmol. He received a prior two-year extension before the 2024 season, and that confidence has continued even with recent leadership changes, including the retirement of John Mozeliak and the appointment of Chaim Bloom as president of baseball operations.

The decision to extend Marmol’s contract appears to be rooted in an understanding of the challenges he’s faced. For much of his tenure, the Cardinals roster has been characterized by aging players and a lack of significant upgrades. Outside of acquiring Contreras and Sonny Gray – both of whom were later traded to the Boston Red Sox – the team has largely refrained from substantial trades or free agent signings, instead relying on internal development that has yet to materialize. This strategy was, in part, a result of reallocating funds from player development to bolster the big league payroll, a decision the organization has since reversed, shifting its focus back towards rebuilding the farm system.

Bloom and team ownership clearly recognize the circumstances surrounding Marmol’s performance. The Cardinals chose to retain a manager they believed in enough to appoint as the youngest in MLB at the time of his hiring. Now entering his fifth season as a big league manager, and with a decade of prior coaching experience, Marmol brings a wealth of experience in working with both veteran players and developing young talent. His work with the 2025 Cardinals team, which operated without the immediate pressure to contend, is expected to be particularly valuable as the organization embarks on a rebuilding phase.

The Cardinals are clearly signaling a commitment to a long-term vision, and retaining Marmol is a key component of that plan. The organization is now focused on scaling back payroll and reinvesting in player development, aiming to build a sustainable contender for the future. Marmol’s experience navigating a roster in transition, coupled with his ability to work with young players, positions him as a potentially valuable asset during this rebuilding process. The coming seasons will be critical in determining whether this vote of confidence will translate into on-field success for the Cardinals.
