CSKA Sofia to Release Ilian Iliev at Season’s End
CSKA Sofia is set to part ways with midfielder Ilian Iliev at the end of the current season, as his contract with the club expires this summer and a new deal is not being offered, multiple reports confirm.
The 26-year-old’s role within the team has diminished significantly in recent months under head coach Hristo Yanev. Iliev has made only four appearances as a substitute this year, totaling 34 minutes of playing time, and has been an unused substitute in two further matches. He is currently considered only the sixth-choice option in central midfield, behind Zhordao, Eto’o, Ebong, Sole, and Petko Panayotov.
The tactical setup employed by Yanev is also contributing to Iliev’s limited opportunities. The coach favors a 4-1-4-1 formation that doesn’t feature a traditional playmaker positioned directly behind the central striker, reducing the need for a player with Iliev’s skillset. This shift in tactics has effectively minimized the role of a classic number 10.
Iliev joined CSKA Sofia in the summer of 2024, brought in by then-manager Aleksandar Tomash. Despite initial expectations, he has struggled to establish himself as a key figure in the squad and was frequently deployed in an unfamiliar role on the right wing. Throughout his time with the club, Iliev has accumulated 55 appearances and scored 5 goals.
Despite his reduced playing time, Iliev still has the potential to achieve a notable milestone before the season concludes. Should he score against Levski in any of the remaining three derby matches, he would become part of the first father-son duo to score in the Eternal Derby. His father, Ilian Iliev Sr., scored twice against CSKA while playing for Levski.
The anticipated departure of Iliev is part of a broader clear-out at CSKA Sofia. The club is also reportedly preparing to release midfielder Ulaos Skarsem, who is currently training with the reserve team and is expected to have his contract terminated before the end of the month. This suggests a significant reshaping of the midfield ahead of next season.
Ivan Turitsov and Mohamed Brahimi also have contracts that are set to expire, but indications suggest that both players are more likely to sign extensions with the club. Their potential renewals would provide some continuity amidst the changes in the squad.
Iliev’s situation highlights the challenges faced by players adapting to new tactical systems and managerial preferences. While he arrived with a degree of expectation, his inability to secure a consistent starting position, coupled with the shift in formation, has ultimately led to this outcome. His departure will leave a void in the squad, but also create an opportunity for other midfielders to step up and compete for playing time.
The decisions being made by CSKA Sofia management signal a clear intent to rebuild and reshape the team for future success. The club is clearly prioritizing players who fit into Yanev’s tactical vision and are willing to contribute to the long-term goals of the organization. The coming months will be crucial as CSKA Sofia navigates these changes and prepares for the next season.
The situation with Skarsem further underscores the club’s commitment to streamlining the squad and making room for new talent. His relegation to the reserve team and impending contract termination demonstrate a decisive approach to player management. The club is clearly focused on building a cohesive and competitive team that can challenge for honors.
The potential contract extensions for Turitsov and Brahimi offer a degree of stability amidst the upheaval. Both players have demonstrated their value to the team and are seen as critical components of the squad. Their continued presence would provide valuable experience and leadership.
