Czech Football: Match-Fixing Scandal Rocks FACR Before Ireland Play-Off

Czech Football: Match-Fixing Scandal Rocks FACR Before Ireland Play-Off

March 24, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Czech Football Rocked by Match-Fixing Scandal Ahead of Crucial Playoff

The Czech Republic national team is facing a crisis of confidence and disruption just days before their vital World Cup playoff against the Republic of Ireland, following the revelation of a widespread match-fixing scandal. A massive police operation, involving Europol and Interpol, has led to dozens of arrests across the country, throwing the nation’s footballing landscape into turmoil.

The Czech Football Association (FACR) initiated the investigation, which has been running for three years and has uncovered alleged corruption spanning all levels of the game – from youth competitions to the top flight. The focus of the probe centers on the Moravia region in the east of the country, with accusations extending beyond simple betting corruption to actively influencing match outcomes.

FACR president David Trunda described the operation as “perhaps the largest in the history of Czech football,” sending an urgent message to executive committee members early Tuesday morning. “Since 6am, a massive operation – perhaps the largest in the history of Czech football – has been under way,” Trunda stated. “Europol and Interpol are involved in the operation. Everything is being coordinated with the UEFA anti-match-fixing unit.”

The scale of the investigation is significant, with the FACR’s ethics committee initiating disciplinary proceedings against more than 40 individuals – players, officials, referees, and club representatives. This includes teams competing in the top league down to the fourth division, as well as youth leagues. Martin Holub, chairman of the ethics commission, confirmed the initiation of 47 disciplinary proceedings, primarily on suspicion of bribery and match-fixing.

Among those reportedly implicated are Jan Wolf, the mayor of Karvina and owner of the Czech First League club of the same name, and Karviná footballer Samuel Šigut. The involvement of a town mayor and a current professional player underscores the depth and breadth of the alleged corruption.

The FACR has emphasized its proactive role in uncovering the scandal, stating it has been cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies from the outset. Trunda stressed the association’s commitment to transparency and its determination to eradicate betting mafia influence from Czech football. “From the beginning of our activities, we have wanted the FAČR to act transparently. I will do everything to ensure that the betting mafia disappears from the football environment,” he said.

According to reports, a Balkan betting group known as “Gypsy” has been gaining influence in the Czech Republic in recent years, attempting to infiltrate clubs facing financial difficulties. This suggests a systematic effort to exploit vulnerabilities within the Czech football system.

The timing of the scandal is particularly damaging, coming just two days before the crucial World Cup playoff against Ireland. While the FACR has not directly addressed the potential impact on the national team’s preparations, the disruption caused by the arrests and investigations is undeniable. The Czech sports minister, Boris Šťastný, has stated he is “closely monitoring” the situation, acknowledging that influencing competitions through betting is “the bane of sport.”

The FACR has provisionally banned most of the players involved in the investigation from competitive activity, pending the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings. Integrity Officer Kamil Javurek’s internal work and the cooperation with the Czech Police were highlighted as crucial to the swift action taken.

Uefa has confirmed its involvement through its anti-match-fixing unit, but declined to comment further, citing its standard practice of not commenting on ongoing investigations. The investigation relates to matches from 2023, indicating a sustained period of alleged wrongdoing.

The fallout from this scandal is likely to be far-reaching, potentially impacting the integrity of the Czech League and raising serious questions about the governance of the sport in the country. The immediate focus, however, remains on the World Cup playoff against Ireland, with the Czech Republic now facing not only a challenging opponent on the pitch but also a significant crisis of confidence off it.
