Denny Hamlin Targets 67 NASCAR Wins Before Final Season

Denny Hamlin Targets 67 NASCAR Wins Before Final Season

March 17, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

LAS VEGAS – Denny Hamlin has redefined success for himself and it’s a definition that extends far beyond championship aspirations. Following his victory at the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, Hamlin now boasts 61 career NASCAR Cup Series wins, placing him tenth on the all-time list. For Hamlin, reaching the 60-win milestone was a personal benchmark, a tangible measure of achievement he felt he could control more directly than the often-unpredictable championship battle.

The road to 61 wasn’t without its drama. Hamlin overcame a speeding penalty on pit road, a setback that could have derailed his race. However, he demonstrated the resilience and strategic prowess that have become hallmarks of his career, ultimately securing the checkered flag and surpassing Dale Earnhardt’s previous total of 76 wins.

“For much of the past several seasons, Denny Hamlin said reaching 60 career NASCAR Cup Series wins was his most important career goal, even more than the elusive championship,” Hamlin stated on his Actions Detrimental podcast on Monday. “And he now sits at 61 after winning on Sunday at Las Vegas.”

Hamlin’s focus now shifts to continuing to add to his win total. He identified Darlington, Kansas, and Martinsville as immediate opportunities, expressing a particular desire to discover success at Talladega Superspeedway, a track where he has historically struggled despite aggressive attempts to position himself for victory. “I’m just thinking of the tracks,” Hamlin said. “Secure another win, that’s the goal. One of those two races. One of those three.”

Looking ahead, Hamlin is realistic about his potential to climb the all-time wins list further. With his current contract slated to end after the next season, he estimates he could reach a total of 67 wins. This projection is based on maintaining his current average of approximately three to four wins per year. “I thought that realistically it was… I think … I don’t know … I’m going to fall at 67,” Hamlin explained. “That’s where I think it ends more than likely. And then the next year, more than likely 67. That’s just by the numbers.”

The all-time wins list remains dominated by legendary names:

  1. Richard Petty 200
  2. David Pearson 105
  3. Jeff Gordon 93
  4. Darrell Waltrip 84
  5. Jimmie Johnson 83
  6. Cale Yarborough 83
  7. Dale Earnhardt 76
  8. Kyle Busch 63
  9. Denny Hamlin 61

Hamlin’s victory in Las Vegas likewise comes amidst other notable developments in the NASCAR Cup Series. Joe Gibbs Racing and Chris Gabehart were recently granted expedited discovery in a court case, according to reports. Meanwhile, Daniel Suárez publicly expressed his loss of respect for Ross Chastain following comments made after the Las Vegas race, adding another layer of intrigue to the competitive landscape.

The win at Las Vegas underscores Hamlin’s continued relevance and competitiveness in the sport. Despite facing challenges like penalties and the ever-evolving dynamics of NASCAR racing, he consistently demonstrates the ability to contend for victories. His focus on accumulating wins, rather than solely chasing a championship, reflects a unique perspective and a determination to leave a lasting legacy in the sport. Hamlin’s approach is a testament to his dedication and a clear indication that he intends to remain a force in NASCAR for the foreseeable future.

Hamlin’s success isn’t just about raw speed; it’s about adaptability and a relentless pursuit of improvement. His willingness to analyze his performance, identify areas for growth, and adjust his strategy accordingly has been instrumental in his longevity and consistent success. This was evident in his ability to overcome the pit road penalty in Las Vegas and still emerge victorious.

As Hamlin looks ahead to the next races on the schedule, he will undoubtedly face stiff competition from a field of talented drivers, including Chase Elliott, who finished second in Las Vegas. However, with his proven track record and unwavering determination, Hamlin is well-positioned to continue adding to his win total and solidify his place among the all-time greats in NASCAR history. The upcoming races at Darlington, Kansas, and Martinsville will provide crucial opportunities for Hamlin to achieve his immediate goal of securing another victory and further cementing his legacy in the sport.
