Doncic’s 51 Points Lead Lakers Past Bulls in LeBron’s Return

Doncic’s 51 Points Lead Lakers Past Bulls in LeBron’s Return

March 13, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

LOS ANGELES – Thursday night at Crypto.com Arena witnessed a spectacular offensive display as Luka Doncic poured in 51 points, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a dominant 142-130 victory over the Chicago Bulls in LeBron James’ return to the lineup. The performance marked Doncic’s highest-scoring game as a Laker and served as a resounding statement of the team’s offensive potential.

James, playing in his first game after a three-game absence due to foot, elbow and hip injuries, contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. However, the night unequivocally belonged to Doncic, whose scoring prowess was complemented by a balanced attack from the Lakers’ starting five, who combined for 137 points – the most by a Lakers starting lineup in a regulation game since the 1970-71 season, according to ESPN Research.

“It feels special,” Doncic said, acknowledging the significance of his performance. “Obviously, to have a 50-point game in here, it feels highly special.” The standing ovation he received as he exited the game late in the fourth quarter, punctuated by James encouraging the crowd to amplify their cheers, underscored the impact of his performance.

Beyond Doncic and James, the Lakers’ offense was firing on all cylinders. Austin Reaves added 30 points, Deandre Ayton chipped in with 23, and Rui Hachimura contributed 15, ensuring a comprehensive offensive showing.

Lakers coach JJ Redick emphasized the team-first approach that fueled the victory, highlighting James’ willingness to adapt his game to maximize the team’s overall effectiveness. “LeBron and I, we talked, we had a great conversation over the last couple days,” Redick said. “He wants to do everything possible to help his team win, and he understands the importance of making sure Luka and AR can be at their best. And you grasp, that’s incredible with him.”

James himself echoed this sentiment, downplaying any personal sacrifice in favor of team success. “If it benefits others, it benefits the team,” he stated. “The team is most important. Everybody’s successful when we win. So yeah, it is a sacrifice. I know what I’m capable of still doing as an individual, but what’s important for this team, I’m able to adapt to… And that’s the only thing that matters. And the win is the only thing that matters.”

The Lakers’ success with James sharing the scoring load is becoming a notable trend. The team is now 8-3 this season when James isn’t one of the team’s top two players in field goal attempts, a statistic that underscores the team’s growing offensive versatility.

This victory extends the Lakers’ winning streak to seven games in their last eight, propelling them to third place in the Western Conference standings with 16 regular-season games remaining. The surge in form comes at a crucial juncture, as the playoffs loom on the horizon.

James attributed much of the team’s recent success to the dynamic partnership between Doncic and Reaves. “AR and Luka, offensively, have been magical and dynamic,” he said, acknowledging their pivotal roles in the team’s offensive transformation.

Interestingly, Doncic revealed a somewhat unusual source of motivation for his performance: an interaction with Chicago Bulls forward Matas Buzelis. “Somebody started talking to me, so that woke me up,” Doncic said, adding cryptically, “I’m not going to say what he said, but if I said that, I would definitely acquire a tech.”

Austin Reaves continued his impressive form, surpassing 25 points for the third consecutive game – his longest such streak since late November. He also reached a career milestone, becoming the 46th undrafted player in NBA history to score over 5,000 points.

“I obviously have delusional confidence in myself when it comes to basketball,” Reaves said with a smile. “But when the game’s over and I’ve got to go home and think about it, I don’t really think of myself in the category of some of these other guys. But I just enjoy playing basketball, playing the right way and continuing to get better.”

The Lakers appear to be peaking at the opportune moment, demonstrating a cohesive and potent offensive attack. James emphasized the importance of maintaining this level of focus and intensity as the playoffs approach. “Every game matters and the way that you approach the game matters,” he said. “It’s mid-March. The postseason is in a month, so it has to be…”

Doncic echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for continued diligence. “It’s definitely the right moment [to play better],” he said. “But, obviously, we got to continue to do that. If we relax now, it’s not going to be worth [anything]. So we got to keep doing that same thing.”
