Emoni Narawa: Injury, Family & All Blacks Dreams Fuel Chiefs Return
AUCKLAND, Fresh Zealand – Emoni Narawa has committed his future to New Zealand rugby, signing a long-term extension with both the New Zealand Rugby and the Chiefs, forgoing potential opportunities overseas. The decision, revealed this week, stems from a desire to compete in another Rugby World Cup and a deep connection to his family and community in New Zealand.
The winger, who has experienced both the elation of international competition and the heartbreak of injury, spoke candidly about the factors influencing his choice. “I went to the last World Cup and the dream was over before it even started,” Narawa told the Herald from Perth. The reference points to a previous period of consideration for offers outside of New Zealand.
A devastating injury sustained during a match against the Springboks last year – a punctured lung and broken rib suffered although contesting a high ball – served as a stark reminder of the fragility of a playing career. “It was devastating getting told that your dream has been cut short because of injury,” he explained. The injury required four nights in hospital and a grueling 12-week recovery period, which he described as “the toughest I’ve ever had mentally.”
Despite the setback, Narawa’s resolve to represent his country remained unwavering. “I sat down with my partner and one thing that came out was to try and have another crack at a World Cup,” he said. “So staying in New Zealand was the only way I could do that and that’s the main reason I re-signed.”
Beyond the professional ambition, personal considerations played a significant role. Narawa emphasized the importance of family, noting that his loved ones are settled and happy in New Zealand. The support of his wife, Danielle, and their two daughters, Nyla and Milla, was particularly crucial during his recovery. “Nyla was only 2 weeks old at the time, so as devastating as it was, my silver lining was I got to spend time with my newborn,” he shared. “It was tough, it was gutting, but I guess that’s where you see the importance of having a good support system around you.”
Narawa’s journey to this point has been marked by both promise and adversity. He has been limited to four test appearances since his debut in 2023, where he scored a try in a 41-12 victory. His return to the field for his 50th Chiefs appearance has been encouraging, with two tries scored in his last three games, demonstrating a return to form. He is currently focused on establishing himself as a consistent starter for the Chiefs.
The winger’s impact on the field is undeniable. During last year’s match against the Springboks at Eden Park, he made an immediate impression, scoring a stunning try within the opening 90 seconds, showcasing his speed and skill. However, that moment of brilliance was quickly followed by the injury that sidelined him for an extended period.
The Chiefs, currently sixth in the Super Rugby standings with three wins and two defeats, will rely on Narawa’s contributions as they continue their season. He acknowledges a sense of unfinished business with the team, having experienced defeat in four of the last five finals. “Growing up in Fiji, [I] didn’t really dream of even playing one game for a Super team, but to play 50 games is an absolute dream,” Narawa said. “Having come out second best, there is still a bit of disappointment that’s going to hang around in the background, so fingers crossed and hopefully You can get things together and hopefully we come out on top.” The Chiefs face the Western Force on Saturday night.
Looking ahead, Narawa is also hoping to impress new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie and earn a spot on the tour of South Africa. His recent performances suggest he is on the right track, but he understands that competition for places in the national squad is fierce. Staying fit and maintaining his current form will be paramount to achieving that goal.
Narawa’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to his family and his sport. His decision to remain in New Zealand reflects a desire to chase his dreams on home soil, surrounded by the support network that has helped him overcome adversity. As he continues his career with the Chiefs and strives for further success with the All Blacks, he will undoubtedly inspire fans with his talent and unwavering spirit.
