EVIL to WWE? NJPW Star Reportedly in Talks for NXT Debut
The professional wrestling landscape could see a significant international addition as Latest Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) star EVIL is reportedly in discussions with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Whereas a deal isn’t finalized, the veteran performer reportedly prefers to initiate his WWE career within the developmental system of NXT, a move that would allow for a smoother transition to the promotion’s style.
According to reports from Voices of Wrestling, Takaaki Watanabe – EVIL’s given name – is keen on maintaining his established “EVIL” character should he sign with WWE. This suggests a desire to avoid a complete rebranding, aiming instead to leverage the persona he’s cultivated over years in Japanese wrestling. The preference for NXT stems from a strategic approach to acclimatizing to WWE’s unique presentation and performance demands before potentially moving to the main roster shows, RAW or SmackDown.
Watanabe’s career began in 2011 with NJPW, initially as a “young lion” – a developmental trainee within the organization. A pivotal experience came in 2014 with an excursion to Ring of Honor (ROH), where he gained valuable experience in the American wrestling scene. He returned to NJPW in 2015, fully embracing the “EVIL” persona that would grow synonymous with his in-ring work.
The potential move to WWE follows a pattern of NJPW talent finding opportunities within the American promotion. This trend gained momentum in recent years, and EVIL’s potential arrival would further solidify the connection between the two wrestling powerhouses. Reports surfaced as early as January, as noted by Sean Ross Sapp, indicating that WWE and other Japanese companies were likely destinations for Watanabe should he choose to exit NJPW. Sapp’s reporting also highlighted that EVIL had been observed backstage at WWE events, supporting colleagues and engaging in preliminary discussions with company officials.
EVIL’s rise within NJPW was marked by significant achievements and a notable character evolution. Initially a member of Los Ingobernables de Japón, a popular faction known for its rebellious attitude, he dramatically shifted allegiances in July 2020 by joining Bullet Club. This move culminated in a landmark victory at Dominion in Osaka-jo Hall on July 12, 2020, where he defeated Tetsuya Naito to capture both the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, becoming a double champion and establishing himself as a top star in NJPW.
Though, the path to a WWE contract isn’t without internal debate. While EVIL reportedly favors an NXT start to ease his transition, WWE is reportedly considering a direct debut on the main roster. Ringside News reports a disagreement between EVIL’s preference and WWE’s inclination. The company seemingly believes a main roster arrival would immediately signal intent and capitalize on EVIL’s established reputation.
The differing viewpoints highlight the complexities of integrating established international stars into the WWE system. Starting in NXT would allow EVIL to refine his skills for the WWE audience, build familiarity with the company’s style, and potentially connect with fans on a more personal level. A direct jump to RAW or SmackDown, while potentially impactful, carries the risk of higher expectations and a steeper learning curve.
As of , discussions are ongoing, and the final decision regarding EVIL’s WWE debut remains uncertain. The outcome will likely shape not only his career trajectory within the company but also the broader strategy for incorporating international talent into the WWE landscape. The wrestling world will be watching closely to see where EVIL lands and how his unique skillset and established character will be utilized in his next chapter.
