F1: New Straight Mode Zones & Turns Honoring Women in Racing | Australian GP

F1: New Straight Mode Zones & Turns Honoring Women in Racing | Australian GP

March 6, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Melbourne, Australia – The Friday, Sunday Australian Grand Prix marks the official start of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship and with it comes a series of changes designed to enhance overtaking opportunities and celebrate key figures within the sport. The Albert Park Street Circuit will feature five “straight mode zones” – an evolution of the previous DRS (Drag Reduction System) – and a special dedication to two prominent female engineers in the paddock.

The shift from four DRS zones to five straight mode zones signifies a continued effort by Formula 1 to promote more passing maneuvers. These zones, activated and detected at the end of the lap at Turns 13 and 14, allow drivers to temporarily reduce drag on their cars, increasing top speed and facilitating overtaking. The change reflects the ongoing refinement of aerodynamic regulations aimed at creating a more dynamic and competitive racing environment.

Beyond the on-track adjustments, the Australian Grand Prix will also serve as a platform to recognize the contributions of women in motorsport. In a gesture coinciding with International Women’s Day, Turn Six at Albert Park will be dedicated to Laura Mueller, race engineer with TGR Haas F1 Team, and Hannah Schmitz, head of race strategy at Red Bull Racing.

Mueller’s inclusion is particularly noteworthy as she is the first female race engineer in Formula 1 history. Now in her second season with Haas, she works directly with driver Esteban Ocon, a veteran of 180 Grand Prix starts with four career podiums and one victory, totaling 483 points. Her role is critical in optimizing Ocon’s car performance and race strategy throughout the weekend.

Schmitz, meanwhile, has develop into a central figure in Red Bull’s recent success. Her strategic decisions have been instrumental in securing numerous wins and podium finishes for the team. Her ability to analyze race data, anticipate competitor moves, and make split-second calls under pressure has earned her widespread respect within the Formula 1 community.

The dedication of Turn Six is a symbolic gesture acknowledging the growing influence of women in a traditionally male-dominated sport. It highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion within Formula 1 and aims to inspire future generations of female engineers and strategists.

The 2026 season represents the eleventh year of competition for TGR Haas F1 Team, fielding a driver lineup of Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman. Bearman, with 27 Grand Prix starts under his belt, has achieved a career-best finish of fourth, accumulating 48 points. The team completed extensive pre-season testing, logging 794 laps – equivalent to 4297.12 kilometers – across six days at the Bahrain International Circuit, preparing for the challenges of the 2026 season.

Australia holds a significant place in Formula 1 history, hosting its first Grand Prix in 1985 at the Adelaide Street Circuit. The event then moved to Albert Park in 1996, and this year’s race marks the 24th time Australia has opened the Formula 1 season. The 2026 calendar is a record-equaling 24-event schedule, mirroring the length of the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The Albert Park Street Circuit itself is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a Formula 1 venue. The 5.278km circuit, known for its high-speed curves, heavy braking zones, and close proximity of gravel traps and walls, presents a unique challenge for drivers. Its temporary nature means the track surface evolves significantly throughout the race weekend, increasing the likelihood of Safety Car deployments or race stoppages.

Beyond Melbourne, TGR Haas F1 Team will also contest three home races in the United States – Miami (May 3), Austin (October 25), and Las Vegas (November 21). The 2026 season will also feature six Sprint events, and a new race in Madrid in September, adding further complexity and excitement to the championship battle.

The 2026 season also marks a significant regulatory shift for Formula 1, with wholesale changes to chassis and power unit rules. These changes include narrower and lighter cars, revised aerodynamics, and increased electrical power from the engines. These advancements are designed to improve efficiency, sustainability, and the overall spectacle of the sport.
