Father & Son Smash Cricket Record with Incredible 590 Partnership

Father & Son Smash Cricket Record with Incredible 590 Partnership

March 16, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Adelaide, Australia – A father-son cricket partnership for the ages unfolded on Saturday at the Ascot Park Primary School oval, as Darren Cheek, 63 and his son Sam, 38, combined for an astonishing, unbeaten 590-run opening stand for Coromandel Valley Cricket Club against Morphettville Park in a Section 8 match of the Adelaide and Suburban Cricket Association. The innings not only secured a crucial win for Coromandel Valley but also etched their names into the record books.

The remarkable feat carries a poignant echo of the past for Darren Cheek. Thirty years prior, in 1996, he scored 184 against the very same Morphettville Park side, a moment witnessed by a nine-year-ancient Sam cheering from the sidelines. “Darren will never forget the time he hit 184 against Morphettville Park in 1996 – not for the century, but for the joy of hearing his son Sam cheering excitedly for him from the sidelines,” as Darren recalled.

Sam Cheek’s contribution to the record-breaking partnership was particularly dominant, blasting an incredible 402 not out off just 137 balls. His innings was punctuated by a staggering 42 sixes and 30 boundaries, showcasing a relentless attacking display. Darren provided a steady hand, finishing with 175 not out from 108 deliveries. Together, they batted through the entire 40-over allocation, leaving the Morphettville Park bowlers with no answers.

The innings almost met an abrupt end before it truly began. Sam was dropped on a duck from his second ball, with the fielder unfortunately struck in the head as the catch slipped through his fingers. This early reprieve proved pivotal, allowing Sam to unleash his devastating form. “You always find it when you have a good score, the bowlers start getting nervous and you can see in their eyes there,” Darren explained. “They start bowling short and they start bowling full tosses … and [Sam] just went bang. It didn’t matter it was a small ground because most of his sixes were just huge.”

Darren acknowledged a slightly slower start for his son, but emphasized the importance of early momentum. “Fortunately, the first couple of overs I was hitting them well and hitting the middle,” he said. “It was a short boundary down straight, so my favourite shot is driving and even lofted drive, so I started off well, but Sam was in all sorts at the beginning.” He strategically focused on maximizing his own scoring early on, creating the platform for Sam to explode later in the innings.

The pair’s intent was clear from the outset. “We knew that we had to have a big win and we had to get a big percentage quotient on our ladder to get up into the final,” Darren stated, revealing the team’s strategic focus on securing a high-scoring victory to improve their position in the standings. This ambition fueled their aggressive approach at the crease.

The magnitude of their achievement began to sink in for Darren shortly after the innings concluded. He received a text message from an acquaintance in Mildura, inquiring about the innings, highlighting the rapid spread of news about their remarkable feat. “I get a text message on my phone from an acquaintance… saying, ‘Well done on your innings today,’” Darren recounted. “And like, I reply back saying, ‘what the hell, how do you know about that already?’”

Despite the dominant performance, Darren was quick to acknowledge the sportsmanship of the Morphettville Park team. He noted their captain’s efforts to maintain morale and encourage his players throughout the match. “I can’t speak more highly of how good they were in their sportsmanship and their captain just kept pumping their players up, just saying, ‘come on, this is cricket.’ They fought it out the whole day.” The opposing team even provided a guard of honor as Darren and Sam walked off the field, a testament to their respect for the remarkable innings.

For Darren, who has been a member of the Coromandel Cricket Club since 1983, the opportunity to share this experience with his son added an extra layer of significance. “It’s 30 years later and I’m having the joy of being with [Sam] and having the joy of seeing him, doing these remarkable things, so it was pretty special.” He expressed a desire to continue playing alongside his son, with the ultimate goal of one day sharing the field with his grandsons.

The match wasn’t entirely one-sided, as Morphettville Park managed to reach 146-3 in their response. However, the monumental total set by Coromandel Valley proved insurmountable. The partnership of Darren and Sam Cheek has undoubtedly created a lasting memory, not only for themselves and their families, but for the entire cricket community.
