Filipe Luis Fired: Flamengo Manager Departs After Libertadores Triumph

Filipe Luis Fired: Flamengo Manager Departs After Libertadores Triumph

March 3, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Rio de Janeiro – In a stunning turn of events, Flamengo have sacked head coach Filipe Luís just hours after a dominant 8-0 victory over Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca semifinals. The dismissal, announced on March 3, 2026, comes less than three months after Luís led the club to a league and Copa Libertadores double, and despite recently signing a contract extension through December 2027.

The club statement confirmed the departure of Luís, along with his assistant Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares. “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team,” the statement read. “Ivan Palanco and Diogo Linhares are also leaving the club.” Flamengo thanked Luís for his contributions, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

Luís, a former left-back who earned 44 caps for the Brazilian national team, transitioned into coaching after retiring as a player at Flamengo in 2023. He was appointed head coach in September 2024 and quickly established himself as a successful leader, guiding the team to four titles in his short tenure: the 2024 Copa do Brasil, the 2025 Supercopa, the 2025 Campeonato Carioca, and the prestigious 2025 Copa Libertadores, defeating Palmeiras 1-0 in the final.

His success extended to continental competition. Flamengo reached the last-16 phase of the expanded 2025 Club World Cup, topping their group which included eventual champions Chelsea, before falling to Bayern Munich 4-2. They had previously defeated Cruz Azul and Pyramids in earlier rounds.

But, the start to the 2026 season proved challenging. Flamengo experienced what has been described as their worst start to a season in the last ten years, suffering five defeats in twelve matches. The club lost the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and were defeated by Lanús of Argentina in the Recopa Sudamericana, losing both legs of the tie. Monday’s emphatic victory over Madureira, securing their place in the Campeonato Carioca final against Fluminense, proved to be Luís’s final match in charge.

The timing of the dismissal is particularly surprising, coming so soon after the club’s dominant performance and qualification for the Carioca final. Luís himself expressed his deep affection for the club in the lead-up to the Madureira match, stating, “Pase lo que pase, si mañana no estoy aquí, mi amor por el Flamengo siempre existirá.” (Regardless of what happens, if tomorrow I am not here, my love for Flamengo will always exist.)

During his time at the helm, Luís amassed an impressive record of 64 wins in 101 games, with only 15 defeats. His tactical acumen and ability to integrate youth players into the first team had garnered praise from within the club and across Brazilian football. He had even been tipped as a potential future manager of the Brazilian national team.

The decision to relieve Luís of his duties comes as a shock to many, given his recent success and the apparent stability he brought to the club. While the reasons behind the dismissal remain somewhat unclear, the club’s poor start to the season and the disappointing results in the Supercopa and Recopa Sudamericana are likely contributing factors. The club has not yet announced a replacement for Luís, leaving the future direction of the team uncertain as they prepare for the Campeonato Carioca final and the upcoming Serie A season.

Flamengo’s swift action underscores the intense pressure and high expectations that arrive with managing one of Brazil’s most popular and successful football clubs. Despite the recent triumphs, the club’s leadership clearly felt a change was necessary to address the team’s struggles and ensure a return to winning form. The dismissal of a coach who had brought so much success in such a short period is a testament to the demanding nature of Brazilian football and the relentless pursuit of silverware.
