Flamengo Sack Coach Filipe Luís After 8-0 Win & Poor Start to Season

Flamengo Sack Coach Filipe Luís After 8-0 Win & Poor Start to Season

March 4, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Rio de Janeiro – In a stunning turn of events, Flamengo has parted ways with head coach Filipe Luís, just hours after a dominant 8-0 victory over Madureira in the Rio de Janeiro league semifinal. The dismissal, announced on Tuesday, brings an abrupt end to Luís’s tenure, despite a recent contract extension and a resounding win that propelled the team to the final.

The decision appears particularly jarring given the lopsided scoreline. However, the victory was met with boos from Flamengo supporters, a clear indication of underlying discontent that has been building throughout the season. Reports suggest that calls for Luís’s removal had been growing since the beginning of the year, despite his celebrated history with the club.

Just two months prior, Flamengo had demonstrated faith in Luís by extending his contract through 2027. This makes the timing of the dismissal all the more unexpected. The club’s statement acknowledged the move, stating that Luís, along with assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares, would no longer be with the team. Flamengo thanked Luís for his contributions as both a player and coach, wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Luís himself acknowledged the end of his cycle with Flamengo, stating, “I leave at peace, with my head up high and a clear conscience. Soccer is made of cycles and ours was historical.”

The dismissal comes amidst a challenging start to the campaign for the defending South American and Brazilian champions. Flamengo has experienced its worst start to a season in the last decade, punctuated by losses in both the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and the South American Recopa to Lanús of Argentina. Currently, the team sits 11th in Brazil’s Serie A, having secured only four points from their opening three games.

Luís’s arrival at Flamengo in 2019 as a player marked the beginning of a highly successful period. He played a pivotal role in securing 10 trophies for the club, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores championships. He transitioned to a coaching role in 2024, achieving 64 wins in 101 games, with only 15 defeats.

The club’s recent financial activity suggests a continued commitment to success. Flamengo recently completed the signing of midfielder Lucas Paquetá for a reported fee of €35 million ($40.5 million), demonstrating the club’s financial strength within the region.

The reaction from within the Flamengo squad has been one of gratitude and respect. Midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta expressed his appreciation on Instagram, stating that Luís “will always be one of us,” and reflecting that “sometimes you only know how much you’re worth when you become a memory.”

Looking ahead, Flamengo is reportedly in discussions with Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim to capture over the helm. Jardim has been without a club since leaving Cruzeiro in December. Sources indicate that the club is moving quickly to secure his services, signaling a desire for stability and a swift return to winning form.

The abrupt nature of Luís’s departure raises questions about the pressures faced by coaches in Brazilian football, even in the wake of significant victories. Although the 8-0 win over Madureira offered a momentary glimpse of Flamengo’s potential, it ultimately proved insufficient to quell the growing dissatisfaction and secure Luís’s position. The club now turns its attention to Jardim, hoping he can restore the winning mentality and guide Flamengo back to the top of both the domestic and continental competitions.

The situation highlights the demanding expectations placed on Flamengo, a club with a rich history and a passionate fanbase. The team’s struggles in the early stages of the season, coupled with the loss of key trophies, ultimately proved too much for Luís to overcome, despite his undeniable contributions to the club’s success.
