France Edge England in Six Nations Thriller: Ramos Penalty Seals Title

France Edge England in Six Nations Thriller: Ramos Penalty Seals Title

March 14, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Paris erupted in celebration Saturday evening as France secured the Six Nations title with a dramatic, last-gasp 48-46 victory over England. Thomas Ramos’s clutch penalty kick in the dying seconds sealed the win, igniting scenes of jubilation at the Stade de France.

The match was a breathtaking display of attacking rugby from both sides, with England delivering arguably their best performance of the tournament despite ultimately falling short. Steve Borthwick’s team ran in seven tries, a testament to a newfound attacking fluency that had been sorely lacking in previous weeks. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome a resilient French side and the unerring boot of Ramos.

England’s transformation was particularly striking. After a campaign marred by inconsistency and a historic defeat to Italy just a week prior, they showcased a level of ambition and execution that had been absent. Ollie Chessum emerged as a standout performer, crossing for two tries and anchoring a dominant forward pack. Props Ellis Genge and Joe Heyes, alongside the relentless Ben Earl, provided the platform for England’s attacking surges.

The game was a seesaw battle from the outset. Louis Bielle-Biarrey opened the scoring for France after just six minutes, collecting a well-placed kick from Ramos. England responded swiftly through Tom Roebuck, sparked by an ambitious attacking move initiated by Elliot Daly. This set the tone for a first half characterized by a relentless exchange of tries.

Bielle-Biarrey continued to be a constant threat for the hosts, adding two more tries to his tally. However, England refused to yield, with Cadan Murley touching down after a clever grubber kick from Ben Spencer. The momentum swung back and forth, fueled by the intensity of ‘Le Crunch’ and the stakes involved.

England’s pack began to assert its dominance, particularly through their maul, which proved to be a potent weapon. Chessum’s first strive came from a powerful drive, and he later combined brilliantly with Alex Coles and Spencer to extend England’s lead. Borthwick’s visible emotion – slamming his hand on his desk in celebration of Murley’s try – underscored the significance of the performance and the relief it brought.

However, England’s discipline proved costly. A yellow card for Genge, for collapsing a maul, allowed France to claw back into the game with a penalty try. The French then capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Bielle-Biarrey completing his hat-trick shortly after the restart and Attissogbe adding another try.

Chessum’s intercept try briefly reignited England’s hopes, and Marcus Smith marked his 50th cap with a try of his own, created by sustained pressure from the visitors. But a breakaway try for Bielle-Biarrey threatened to swing the match decisively in France’s favor.

England refused to surrender, and when France prop Demba Bamba was sin-binned, they seized the opportunity, with Tommy Freeman crossing for their sixth try. But the drama wasn’t over. With the clock ticking down, Ramos stepped up to deliver the decisive penalty, securing the Six Nations title for France in the most dramatic of circumstances.

The match was not without its controversy. The decision to allow France to wear a light blue anniversary kit to commemorate 120 years of ‘Le Crunch’ drew criticism due to the resulting color clash with England’s white jerseys.

While England’s performance offered a glimmer of hope for the future, the defeat leaves questions surrounding Steve Borthwick’s position as head coach. The display, however, was undoubtedly a step in the right direction, demonstrating the team’s potential when playing with ambition and cohesion. For France, the victory represents a continuation of their recent success and solidifies their status as one of the leading forces in international rugby.
