Giannis Antetokounmpo Returns: Bucks Star Back From Calf Strain
Antetokounmpo Returns to Bucks Lineup, Minutes to be Managed
MILWAUKEE – Giannis Antetokounmpo will return to the Milwaukee Bucks lineup Monday night against the Boston Celtics, marking his first game action in over five weeks. The two-time MVP has been sidelined since January 23rd with a right calf strain, an injury that has plagued him intermittently this season.
Bucks coach Doc Rivers confirmed Antetokounmpo’s return during his pregame availability, but also announced the superstar forward will be on a minutes restriction. This cautious approach reflects the team’s concern over re-injury, particularly given Antetokounmpo’s recent history with calf issues. He previously missed three weeks in December due to a similar strain.
This marks the 29th game Antetokounmpo has missed this season, with 23 of those absences stemming from calf problems. The Bucks’ record reflects his absence. they are 15-15 when he plays and 11-18 without him. His return comes at a crucial juncture for Milwaukee, as they fight to secure a spot in the play-in tournament.
Currently 11th in the Eastern Conference standings, the Bucks trail 10th-place Charlotte by three games. The teams finishing seventh through tenth in the East will participate in a play-in tournament to determine the final two playoff berths. Rivers acknowledged the team’s position, stating, “We didn’t play ourself out of it. Obviously I’m competitive. I think we should have had an even better record. But not having your best player for that long and staying above .500 is huge for us.”
Despite the team’s struggles during his absence, the Bucks management resisted calls to shut down Antetokounmpo for the remainder of the season, even if it meant potentially improving their draft position. Both the organization and Antetokounmpo himself expressed a desire for him to return and compete this season. Rivers explained the reasoning behind the decision, saying, “Giannis has worked his butt off. He’s been frustrated over the last week because he wanted to work because he wanted to come back. I think they kept him out longer because of (his recent history of calf strains). We did that the first time. That didn’t work out. But listen, guys, this is basketball. You go out and play, and you’ve just got to hope he stays healthy.”
The Bucks hold their own first-round draft pick, but also have the potential to receive a first-round pick from the Fresh Orleans Pelicans, depending on which selection is less favorable for Milwaukee. Though, the immediate focus is on improving their playoff chances, not future draft capital.
Antetokounmpo’s return is particularly significant given the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future with the team. He will become eligible for a four-year contract extension worth up to $275 million in October. If he doesn’t sign an extension, he could become a free agent at the end of next season.
While Antetokounmpo has consistently expressed his affection for Milwaukee, he has also emphasized his desire to play for a team consistently contending for championships. The Bucks won their first NBA title in 50 years in 2021, but have not advanced past the second round of the playoffs since. During the All-Star break, Antetokounmpo stated, “Right now, as of today, I’m a Milwaukee Buck, and I’m committed to that. Now what happens if things move and change in the future, that change, I can’t control that. If I could predict the future, trust me, I’d be a billionaire.”
The Bucks struggled in their recent games without Antetokounmpo, losing their last two contests by a combined 52 points. Sunday’s 120-97 loss to the Chicago Bulls, which ended the Bulls’ 11-game losing streak, was particularly disheartening, as Milwaukee was outscored 33-8 in the fourth quarter.
Despite missing significant time, Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game this season. If he were to qualify for the league leaders, he would rank eighth in scoring, ninth in rebounding, and just outside the top 25 in assists. He was also selected to his tenth consecutive All-Star Game this season, though his injury prevented him from participating.
The return of Antetokounmpo is expected to provide an immediate boost to the Bucks’ offense and, perhaps more importantly, their defense. His ability to draw double and triple teams should create more space for teammates like Myles Turner and AJ Green. While his perimeter shooting has been less prolific this season, his overall impact on the game remains immense.
