Hocine Achiou: Algerian Coach Takes on Libyan Challenge
The destination wasn’t Algeria, nor a local bench. For Hocine Achiou, a new chapter unfolds with an unexpected move to Libya. At 47, the former playmaker for USM Alger is embarking on his first foreign adventure, taking on a new challenge on Libyan soil.
Achiou has officially joined Al Shomooa SC, currently holding the sixth position in their group with nine points. Whereas the team’s ranking is modest, it presents a stimulating environment for a coach eager to establish a name for himself beyond his homeland. Libya is increasingly becoming a destination for Algerian players and coaches alike, signaling a growing appeal for those seeking opportunities abroad.
The transition to coaching comes naturally for Achiou, following experiences in television commentary and behind-the-scenes management. This move represents a significant step in his career. He felt undervalued in Algeria and is now seeking to prove himself in a league where Algerian expertise has already demonstrated success. Kheireddine Madoui serves as an example, currently leading Al-Nasr SC and demonstrating the potential for Algerian coaches in the Libyan league.
This move to Libya became a necessity after a previous agreement with USM Khenchela fell through unexpectedly. Achiou had reached a full agreement with USMK, as he revealed in an interview with El Heddaf TV. All details were finalized, only for the club to appoint Bilel Dziri in his place, effectively closing the door on his opportunity. This unexpected turn of events led him to explore other options and ultimately accept the challenge in Libya.
Achiou’s career began with ES Ben Aknoun before progressing through the youth ranks of USM Alger. He became a key figure during USM Alger’s African Champions League campaigns in 2003 and 2004, reaching the group stage in both years and the semi-finals in 2003. Despite numerous opportunities to join European clubs, financial terms were never agreed upon. He had trials with Fulham FC and Portsmouth FC in the English Premiership, as well as CS Sedan and FC Lorient in France.
He eventually signed a one-year deal with Swiss club FC Aarau in 2006, scoring on his league debut against FC St. Gallen. Achiou’s playing career continued with returns to USM Alger, JS Kabylie, ASO Chlef, MC Oran, USM Bel-Abbès, RC Arbaâ, and WA Boufarik, before transitioning into coaching.
Achiou likewise represented the Algerian national team, notably scoring a memorable individual goal against Egypt at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. He earned 26 caps for Algeria, contributing three goals during his international career.
The Libyan league has become an increasingly attractive option for Algerian football professionals. The presence of coaches like Madoui demonstrates the potential for success, and Achiou will be hoping to follow in those footsteps. His appointment at Al Shomooa SC represents a fresh start and an opportunity to prove his capabilities on a new stage.
While the circumstances surrounding his departure from USM Khenchela were disappointing, Achiou views this move as a chance to transform a challenging situation into a positive experience. The Libyan league awaits, and Achiou is ready to make his mark.
