Hong Kong Golf Club: History, LIV Golf & Asia’s Oldest Open

Hong Kong Golf Club: History, LIV Golf & Asia’s Oldest Open

March 3, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Hong Kong is set to host the HSBC LIV Golf tournament for the third consecutive year, from March 5th to March 8th, 2026, at the historic Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling. The event promises a blend of world-class golf, live music, and a festival atmosphere, building on the success of previous editions that have already broken attendance records at the venue.

The Hong Kong Golf Club, established in 1889, boasts a legacy as one of Asia’s oldest and most respected golf institutions. For over six decades, championship golf has been central to the club’s identity, having hosted more elite-level tournaments than any other club in Asia. Beyond LIV Golf, the club proudly continues to host the Hong Kong Open annually since 1959, making it Hong Kong’s longest-running professional sporting event and a prestigious title on the continental stage. Since 2023, the course has also been a regular stop on the Asian Tour’s International Series.

The upcoming tournament will feature LIV Golf’s unique team-powered format, with 13 teams and 57 players competing without the traditional cut. This format, combined with the festival-like atmosphere – including live music from headliner Dom Dolla and a variety of food and fan zones – aims to redefine the golf experience for attendees.

The Fanling course itself presents a unique challenge for golfers. Anthony Kim, fresh off his victory at LIV Golf Adelaide in 2026, described the course as “strategic,” emphasizing the need for precision on every shot. It’s one of the shorter courses we play but it’s strategic,” Kim said. You have to pay close attention to every single shot. Despite its shorter length, the course demands careful consideration and tactical play.

Lucas Herbert’s caddie, Nick Pugh, who has extensive experience at Fanling through years on the Asian Tour, echoed this sentiment. Pugh highlighted the course’s traditional, tree-lined layout and the importance of accuracy. It’s beautiful,” Pugh stated. I’ve been coming here for years and years. I started out caddying here on the Asian Tour in Hong Kong with the old Hong Kong Open and it just has a real traditional perceive to the golf course. It’s more of an old school tree-lined layout. The golf course is short but it’s not possible to overpower it. There’s a lot of doglegs and precision is the key around this place. His observations underscore that whereas power can be an advantage in many modern golf courses, Fanling rewards thoughtful shot-making and strategic positioning.

The return of HSBC LIV Golf to Hong Kong signifies the growing presence of the league in Asia. The event is expected to draw significant crowds and further solidify Hong Kong’s position as a key destination for international golf. Tickets are currently available, with options ranging from grounds passes allowing access to the entire venue, to hospitality packages offering premium experiences like private seating and exclusive access. A separate ticket option is available for the Saturday concert experience featuring Dom Dolla.

The tournament’s organizers are anticipating another record-breaking attendance, building on the success of previous years. The combination of top-tier golf, a vibrant festival atmosphere, and a challenging course promises an exciting event for both players and fans. Grounds tickets start at HK $234, while hospitality tickets begin at HK $2,080, offering a range of options for experiencing the event.

Looking ahead, the Hong Kong Golf Club is already preparing to host the fourth edition of the HSBC LIV Golf Hong Kong in 2027, scheduled for February 18th to February 21st. This commitment demonstrates the long-term partnership between LIV Golf and the club, and Hong Kong’s continued dedication to hosting world-class golf events.

The 2026 HSBC LIV Golf Hong Kong event is poised to be a significant sporting and cultural event for the region, attracting both seasoned golf enthusiasts and new fans eager to experience the unique LIV Golf format and atmosphere. The tournament’s success will not only showcase the talent of the world’s best golfers but also highlight Hong Kong’s capabilities as a premier destination for international sporting events.
