A contentious finish at Happy Valley Racecourse on , saw stewards scrutinize a potential protest following interference in the concluding stages of a race involving multiple horses. While no formal objection was lodged, the incident resulted in a suspension for jockey Lyle Ferraris and raised concerns about horse welfare after one horse, Sterling Wongchoy, sustained a fatal injury.
The drama unfolded as Glorious Ryder, ridden by Ferraris, shifted inwards near the finish, making contact with Dragon Sunrise. This maneuver prompted Ferraris to cease using the whip, impacting his ability to fully drive his mount to the line. Dragon Sunrise, in turn, was hampered and crowded, affecting its finishing position. The stewards considered whether sufficient grounds existed for a protest, specifically regarding Glorious Ryder potentially impeding Dragon Sunrise’s run, but ultimately determined there wasn’t enough evidence to warrant intervention and no protest was filed by the connections of Dragon Sunrise.
Ferraris was found guilty of careless riding, specifically for failing to ensure sufficient clearance when shifting inwards. He was subsequently suspended from riding in races for one Hong Kong raceday, scheduled for , at Happy Valley. Stewards assessed the carelessness as Grade 2 and the consequences as Grade 2, taking into account Ferraris’s generally strong record in the saddle.
The race wasn’t without other incidents. Telecom Power blundered shortly after the start and later made contact with Wah May Wai Wai. Wah May Wai Wai’s performance was also noted, with jockey Brett Avdulla reporting the horse came under pressure from the 800-meter mark and failed to finish strongly. Avdulla was questioned regarding his leg extending outwards when Soaring Bronco attempted to improve between Wah May Wai Wai and Telecom Power, but stewards accepted his explanation that he was bracing himself to maintain balance, fearing contact between the two horses.
However, the most tragic outcome of the race was the injury sustained by Sterling Wongchoy. Approaching the finish, the horse suffered a severe injury to its left front leg. Despite immediate veterinary attention, the injury was deemed irreparable, and the difficult decision was made to euthanize the horse. Jockey Dylan McMonagle was examined by the Chief Medical Officer and cleared to continue riding in subsequent races.
Veterinary examinations revealed additional concerns regarding Lucky Blessing, who showed a substantial amount of mucus in its trachea following the race. Both Glorious Ryder and Soaring Bronco were sent for sampling post-race, as were Sterling Wongchoy and Dragon Sunrise.
Further complicating matters, Harry’s Hero was hampered at the start due to Perfecto Moments shifting outwards, causing Harry’s Hero to be carried onto Dragon Sunrise. Perfecto Moments also experienced crowding in the concluding stages, preventing jockey Matthew Yeung from fully urging the horse forward.
