HSBC Sevens: Download the App & Series History Since 1886

March 16, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The HSBC SVNS series made its debut in New York this past weekend, marking the first time the global rugby sevens event has been held in the city. The tournament, held at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey from March 14 to March 15, drew fans eager to witness the fast-paced action of rugby sevens.

Rugby sevens, a variant of rugby union played with seven players per side, emphasizes speed, skill, and open play. The HSBC SVNS, organized by World Rugby, features national sevens teams competing across multiple global host cities. The series, formerly known as the IRB World Sevens Series and the World Rugby Sevens Series, began in the 1999-2000 season with the goal of promoting the elite level of international rugby sevens and developing the game commercially.

The 2025-26 season currently features eight teams, a reduction from the twelve that typically compete. The competition format includes a points-based system, where teams accumulate points based on their finishing position in each tournament. The bottom four teams face a repechage tournament against the top four teams from the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, adding another layer of competition and opportunity for emerging nations.

Historically, New Zealand has dominated the SVNS, winning the first six seasons from 1999-2000 to 2004-05. However, the landscape has become more competitive over time, with Fiji, South Africa, Samoa, Australia, and Argentina all claiming season titles. While England and the United States have consistently placed in the top three, they are yet to secure an overall series championship.

The New York leg of the HSBC SVNS offered fans a chance to experience the energy of the sport firsthand. Tickets were available for single days, club seats, and two-day passes, with prices starting at $80 for a single day. The event’s location at Sports Illustrated Stadium provided a modern venue for the competition, easily accessible from both New York and New Jersey.

World Rugby and USA Rugby partnered with TEG Rugby Live to bring the HSBC SVNS to the United States, highlighting the growing interest in rugby sevens within the American market. The series serves as a crucial pathway for teams aiming to qualify for major events, including the Olympics.

For fans looking to stay connected, the HSBC Sevens App is available for both iOS and Android devices, providing access to schedules, scores, and other event information. The app underscores the series’ commitment to engaging fans through digital platforms.

The HSBC SVNS continues to evolve as a premier international rugby sevens competition, attracting both established rugby nations and emerging teams. The New York event represents a significant step in expanding the sport’s reach and popularity, particularly in North America. The series’ structure, combining a core group of teams with the opportunity for Challenger Series teams to compete, ensures a dynamic and competitive environment.

The sponsorship by HSBC, since 2014, has been instrumental in the growth and development of the series, providing financial support and visibility. The series’ global circuit, spanning five continents, showcases the international appeal of rugby sevens and its ability to captivate audiences worldwide.

As the 2025-26 season progresses, teams will continue to battle for the World Rugby Series title, with each tournament offering valuable points and the chance to solidify their position in the standings. The stakes are high, not only for the championship but also for Olympic qualification, making every match a crucial contest.
