James Hagens: Bruins Prospect Practices with Providence, Set to Debut in AHL | NHL News

March 25, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – James Hagens, the Boston Bruins’ first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, has signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Providence Bruins, the team announced Tuesday. The 19-year-old forward practiced with the AHL affiliate and is expected to make his professional debut Wednesday against the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Hagens, selected seventh overall by Boston last June, capped a remarkable season with Boston College by leading Hockey East in scoring with 47 points (23 goals, 24 assists) in 34 games. He also topped the Eagles with six game-winning goals, two hat tricks and 133 shots on goal. His collegiate success followed a strong freshman campaign where he earned a spot on the conference’s All-Rookie Team after registering 37 points (11 goals, 26 assists).

The Hauppauge, New York native’s arrival in Providence marks a significant step in his development. Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney emphasized the opportunity for Hagens to acclimate to the professional game. “He gets acclimated to the pro game, it’s a big step coming from college, and it just allows him to jump right into the lineup,” Sweeney said. The Bruins aren’t imposing a specific timeline for Hagens’ AHL tenure, preferring to evaluate his progress and comfort level before considering a potential call-up to the NHL.

“There’s just continued evaluation, let him get comfortable and make necessary steps, and as I said, (coach) Marco (Sturm) determines if a player can help us (and) then he’ll be part of our club,” Sweeney explained. “This will be just a process that allows him to get comfortable, and if it presents that he can help our lineup, then that’s the decision we’ll make.”

Hagens’ offensive prowess isn’t limited to the collegiate level. Prior to joining Boston College, he spent two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP), amassing an impressive 187 points (72 goals, 115 assists). He also excelled on the international stage, winning gold medals at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2023 U-18 World Championship. At the 2024 U-18 tournament, Hagens set a single-tournament scoring record with 22 points in seven games, earning tournament MVP honors and leading the U.S. To a silver medal.

Sweeney noted Hagens’ versatility as a potential asset. “His production is still really good,” he said. “He’s played a lot more on the wing, which could be an easier entry point for a young player in the National Hockey League. That, again, remains to be seen. We drafted him as a center, he can play center, but now he’s playing both sides. So, I think that adds to the versatility.”

Hagens expressed his excitement about joining the Providence Bruins and the opportunity to start his professional career. “It was fun. It was really exciting being out there for my first pro practice. It’s definitely something I’ll never forget,” Hagens said. “It’s been really exciting, just waiting to see what the next chapter looks like and now being able to be here, I couldn’t be more excited.” He also highlighted his eagerness to contribute to the team. “Once I heard that, I was really open for it. It’s a great chance to be able to showcase your game, to be able to be a part of a team like this.”

The young forward has already begun connecting with Bruins players, receiving a message from veteran defenseman Charlie McAvoy. “He sent a really nice text; him being a Long Island guy (Long Beach, New York) is something that was really cool,” Hagens shared.

Hagens’ transition to professional hockey comes after a dominant two-year run at Boston College, where he totaled 84 points (34 goals, 50 assists) in 71 games. His ability to consistently generate offense, coupled with his international experience, positions him as a promising prospect for the Bruins. Wednesday’s game against Springfield will provide an early glimpse into how his skills translate to the AHL and the next stage of his hockey journey.
