Jazz Waive Vince Williams Jr. After Grizzlies Trade & ACL Injury

Jazz Waive Vince Williams Jr. After Grizzlies Trade & ACL Injury

March 9, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

The Utah Jazz are adjusting their roster ahead of a matchup with the Golden State Warriors, waiving guard Vince Williams Jr., according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. The move comes just over a month after Williams was acquired in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Jazz landed Williams as part of a larger deal that sent Jaren Jackson Jr. To Memphis. Utah also received Jock Landale and John Konchar in the trade, parting ways with Kyle Anderson, Walter Clayton Jr., Taylor Hendricks and George Niang, along with multiple first-round draft picks. While the trade was viewed as a move to bolster the team’s present and future, Williams’ time in Utah was cut short by a significant injury.

On February 24th, Williams was diagnosed with a torn ACL, effectively ending his season. The injury occurred during a game against the Houston Rockets, where he recorded one point, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal in eight minutes of play before exiting.

Williams entered the NBA as a second-round pick in 2022, selected 47th overall by the Grizzlies. Over his four seasons with Memphis, he appeared in 128 games, making 51 starts and averaging 7.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 21.7 minutes per game. He showed flashes of potential as a versatile guard capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.

With the Jazz, Williams appeared in six games, averaging 4.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.7 steals in 14 minutes per contest. While his sample size was small, he demonstrated a knack for disrupting opposing offenses.

The waiver of Williams opens up a roster spot for the Jazz, allowing them to explore potential additions to the team. However, his injury complicates his immediate future. As an unrestricted free agent, Williams will likely draw interest from teams looking for guard depth, but his recovery from the ACL tear will be a key factor in any potential signing.

Williams is in the third year of a four-year contract, with $2.3 million remaining on his deal for the 2025-2026 season. The Jazz held a team option for the 2026-2027 season, worth $2.4 million, but that option is now void with his release. Any team acquiring Williams will be responsible for his current salary, but his long-term value will depend on his ability to return to form after the injury.

The Jazz’s decision to waive Williams is a difficult one, given his potential and contributions to the team. However, with his injury and the team’s necessitate to evaluate other options, the move makes sense from a basketball perspective. The Jazz will now focus on finding a replacement who can contribute to their playoff push and long-term success.

The timing of the move, ahead of the game against the Warriors, suggests the Jazz are prioritizing roster flexibility and evaluating potential replacements. The Warriors game presents an opportunity for other players to step up and fill the void left by Williams’ absence.

The Jazz’s front office will now turn their attention to identifying potential free agents or players on two-way contracts who could provide depth and versatility. The team will likely prioritize players who can contribute defensively and provide a spark off the bench.
