Joanna Byrne Removed as Drogheda United Co-Chairperson | Trivela Group Statement

Joanna Byrne Removed as Drogheda United Co-Chairperson | Trivela Group Statement

March 23, 2026 Carlos Moreno - Sports Editor Sports

Drogheda United have confirmed the removal of Joanna Byrne as co-chairperson of the club, a decision stemming from a dispute ignited by her public stance on the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming UEFA Nations League fixture against Israel. The move, enacted by the club’s American-based ownership group, Trivela Group, follows weeks of internal tension and Byrne’s insistence on remaining in her voluntary position despite calls for her resignation.

Trivela Group, exercising its authority as the sole shareholder, announced on March 18, 2026, that Byrne had been removed as a director of the club. The board now consists of Benjamin Boycott, Marc Koretzky, Barton Lee, and CEO Rian Wogan, with Boycott assuming the sole chairperson role for the time being. The club stated its intention to appoint a local director and co-chairperson in the near future.

The catalyst for this separation was Byrne’s public statement regarding the Ireland versus Israel match. As a Sinn Féin TD for Louth and the party’s spokesperson on Sport, she voiced her opinion that Ireland should not participate in the fixture although what she described as a “genocide against the Palestinian people” continues. This position drew immediate criticism from the club’s board, who subsequently informed Byrne that her position was “no longer tenable.”

Byrne, however, resisted calls to resign, stating she stood by her comments and believed she was entitled to express her views in her capacity as a spokesperson. She emphasized that she had not referenced the club when making her statement, framing her position as a matter of personal and political principle.

Trivela Group initially characterized the dispute as a “breakdown in trust and confidence,” explicitly stating that it was not related to Byrne’s political views or beliefs. However, the timing and nature of the disagreement clearly link the decision to her public statement on the international fixture.

Joanna Byrne’s involvement with Drogheda United extends beyond her role as co-chairperson. She has been a prominent figure in local football, serving as the first female chairperson in the League of Ireland through her leadership with the Boynesiders. She was also elected to the FAI’s National League Committee in 2023, becoming a vocal advocate for Drogheda on a national stage. Her commitment to the club has been acknowledged by Trivela Group, who thanked her for her “longstanding and ongoing dedication to the club and its success.”

Prior to her election as a TD for Louth in 2024, Byrne served as a Louth County Councillor from 2016 to 2024. During her time on the council, she focused on issues such as social housing, housing maintenance, addiction services, and advocating for improved community infrastructure. She also championed campaigns for Drogheda to achieve city status, a cause she continues to support as a TD.

The situation at Drogheda United highlights the increasing intersection of sport and politics, and the challenges faced by individuals who hold both public office and leadership positions within sporting organizations. Byrne’s case raises questions about the extent to which athletes and administrators can express personal or political views without facing repercussions from their respective organizations. The club’s response, while framed as a matter of trust and confidence, underscores the sensitivity surrounding politically charged issues, particularly those related to international conflicts.

The removal of Byrne leaves Drogheda United with a restructured board, led by Benjamin Boycott. The club will now focus on finding a local director and co-chairperson to fill the void left by Byrne’s departure. The long-term impact of this decision on the club’s performance and its relationship with the local community remains to be seen. However, the dispute has created a significant disruption within the organization and raised important questions about the role of politics in Irish football.

Byrne’s appointment as Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Arts, Sport, Communications, Culture &amp. Media took place on January 28, 2025, further solidifying her position as a prominent voice within the party and a key figure in Irish sporting and cultural discourse. Her continued advocacy for Drogheda, both as a TD and a passionate supporter of the local football club, will likely remain a central focus of her political and public life.
